Super Eagles right full back Leon Balogun played a big role for Mainz 05 to help them beat runaway Bundesliga leaders Bayern Munich 1-2.
Playing in his traditional and preferred right full back the Nigerian frustrated Kingsley Coman and Franck Ribery the few times they tried to operate from his spot.
He didn’t stop there he also gave coverage to the central defence thrice stepping in to mop up balls that look threatening and even when Douglas Costa was introduced in the later stage of the game, Balogun matched him toe for toe.
The only blip to his top class performance was the yellow card he picked up in the 62nd minute but still he finished the game as the defender that won more tackles with six to his name.
27 year old Balogun has 16 league games to his name with 4 yellow cards this season but it’s a remarkable stat taking into consideration that at this time last season he was playing for Darmstadt 98 after he was released by Fortuna Dusseldorf.
Balogun turned down the chance to extend his stay with Darmstadt last summer despite helping them gain promotion to the top flight opting for a move to Mainz 05 where after a slow start he is now thriving.
