Nigeria U-23 forward Taiwo Awoniyi is presently the reason why a proposed loan move to Swedish side Kalmar is yet to be concluded.
Kalmar have had a long standing interest in the gangling forward and he even trained with them for two years before opting for Liverpool ahead of a move to the Swedish side although some reports claim they were compensated owing to the fact that they had a pre contract with the Nigeria youth international.
Owngoalnigeria.com gathered Liverpool have already agreed a deal with Kalmar for the 18 year old to spend a season with the Swedish side as they believe he is still in need of top flight football despite spending the recently concluded season in Germany with FSV Frankurt.
At Frankfurt it took Awoniyi six months to make his league debut and ended the season raking up 903 minutes from 13 games with one goal to his name for the second division German side.
While Liverpool believe he still need more game time before he is ready to push for a spot in their team, Awoniyi isn’t keen on a move to Sweden as he strongly believe a strong show at the Olympics with Nigeria U-23 will attract suitors from teams in the top five European League.
A chance to impress teams during the Suwon Tournament went begging as he was part of a Nigeria team that failed to live up to expectations winning just one and losing two of the three games they played in the tournament including an embarrassing 2-6 loss to Denmark.
On his part Awoniyi lead the line in the three games Nigeria played and despite making his presence felt with smart runs and smart movement with the ball, he failed to convert the numerous chances that came his way hence wasn’t among the goalscorers for Nigeria despite the team scoring six times.
