The appointment of John Obi Mikel as captain of the entire contingent of Nigeria delegation to the Olympics in Rio has continue to divide opinion among sports loving Nigerians.
Chelsea star Mikel was yesterday officially named as captain of Team Nigeria for Rio 2016 Olympics and the decision has been hailed by some but condemned as well by some other section.
While a particular set believe he is about Nigeria’s biggest sport star at the moment others argued it should have been given to the oldest member of the Nigerian contingent to the Olympics.
The oldest Olympian in the Nigerian team is Table Tennis star Segun Toriola who is set to feature in his seventh Olympics for Nigeria after first appearing at the 1992 edition.
Some argued just as Mikel was appointed as captain of the senior national team of Nigeria due to his longevity in the team, Toriola should be made the captain of the Nigerian team as he is presently the oldest member of Team Nigeria.
Mikel one of the two overage players in the Nigerian football team will also captain the Under-23s male football team of Nigeria at the Rio Olympics but this will be his maiden participation at the games after pulling out of the 2008 edition in Beijing due to club commitments.
