Nigeria Under–23s failed to qualify for the final of the Men’s football event at the Rio 2016 Olympics, after losing 0-2 to Germany in the semi-finals.
Owngoalnigeria.com rates the players on parade for Dream Team VI.
Emmanuel Daniel: Could do nothing about the goal scored by the Germans, was solid all through, covered himself in glory despite the defeat. A future Super Eagles goalkeeper if he maintains his career growth…..7/10
Shehu Abdullahi: Erractic and wasteful in possession, couldn’t match the pace and tricks of Serge Gnabry on the left for the Germans…..5/10
Stanley Amuzie: Guilty of ball watching which lead to the goal scored by the Germans, got up the pitch to good effect but wasted several opportunities to deliver telling crosses , had a game to forget…..5/10
Sincere Seth: Covered lot of grounds for the back four, solid in the air, hard in tackles and good with the ball at his feet, one of the few bright sparks on a dour evening for Samson Siasia’s men…..6.5/10
Troost Ekong: Started by giving away possession cheaply but recovered to post a performance that would have landed him the man of the man award, were it not for the loss. Quick, strong and good in duels, his aerial abilities cut out so many crosses that would have unsettled the Nigerian backline…..7.5/10
Usman Mohammed: Failed to get into the game, appeared lost in the middle without the suspended Azubuike Okechukwu, one of his worst display in the shirt of the Under-23s…..4/10
Ndifreke Udo: Took him a while to settle into the rhythm of the game and when he finally did, he covered up for the full backs and central defenders to good effect but failed to do anything meaningful in terms of attacking….5.5/10
Imoh Ezekiel: Was his usual self in using his pace to unsettle his marker but should share part of the blame for not keeping up with his man, should have picked up the left full back who scored the only goal for the Germans…..5/10
Aminu Umar: Did nothing special to justify his inclusion and the fact that he lasted the entire duration of the game, showed the lack of depth in the Nigerian team….3/10
Mikel Obi: The captain was the most fouled Nigerian on the pitch, put himself about for the team and was a threat going forward, showed his class despite the poor showing of his teammates in the midfield…..7/10
Sadiq Umar: Wasted Nigeria’s best chance of the game but troubled the Germans with his towering stature and physical play in duels, his withdrawal killed any hope of Nigeria clawing their way back into the tie…..5/10
Sadiq Popoola: Helped Nigeria keep the ball more than Udo and sprayed it around nicely but just like the man he replaced, he was not a threat in the opponent’s half…..3/10
Junior Ajayi: Failed to have more than four touches on the ball, only meaningful contribution was winning a free kick at the edge of the German box, which was wasted by Amuzie…..3/10
