Daniel Akpeyi is presently the most experienced goalkeeper in the Nigeria national team set up ahead of their clash against Cameroon according to coach of the team Gernot Rohr.
Akpeyi has come under fire following Nigeria’s 0-2 loss to South Africa, but the 31 year old Chippa United shot stopper was once again picked by coach Rohr in the squad for the upcoming back to back World Cup 2018 Qualifiers clash against Cameroon.
Nigeria will take on Cameroon in a top of the table clash in group B of the Africa World Cup 2018 Qualifiers series, with the first of their two games coming up on the 1st of September in Uyo, while the reverse fixture will take place on the 4th in Yaounde.
Rohr has backed Akpeyi to prove his mettle but insist that the choice of who will man the post in the game will be made by the new goalkeeper coach of the team Enrico Pionetti.
“We have Akpeyi, we have Ezenwa, we have Alampasu, we will see. We have a local goalkeeper, we have a very young one and we have another one (Akpeyi) who is more experienced, he is playing in South Africa , and we will see with our goalkeeper coaches to determine who will start the game,” Rohr said in Kano.
