The decision to allow Super Eagles defender William Troost-Ekong leave struggling Belgium outfit Gent has been criticised as one of the worst decison ever taken by a Belgian club.
Ekong was allowed to leave the club for free in the summer after the club opt against taking the option to renew his expiring deal after he failed to break into the squad, following his return from a productive 18 months loan spell in Norway with FK Haugesund.
The 24 year old who helped Nigeria to a bronze medal finish at the Rio 2016 Olympic has grown into one of the main stalwart in the defence for the senior national team of Nigeria, who are through to next year World Cup in Russia.
His performances during the World Cup 2018 Qualifiers for Nigeria also earned him a spot in the 30 man list released by CAF for the 2017 African Player of the year award.
” I still can’t understand why and how he was allow to leave for free to Bursaspor. Obviously they are some regrets at the club right now because they could have made more money from him if they were a little bit patient”, Jon Slay who writes for Belgium online media Foot Belgium told Owngoalnigeria.com.
” I had a chat with some influential people at the club earlier today following the nomination of Ekong for the CAF Player of the year award, and there are regrets all round especially as they are struggling right now”, he remarked.
