After successfully qualifying for the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia, The Nigerian senior team will be hoping to do their best and go as far as possible in the tournament.
However, if they are to do this they need their best legs, and of course, it is most likely that players who were involved in the qualification matches might be among.
There is a long time before the FIFA World Cup in Russia commences, and also before the 23 man squad of the Super Eagles are named. A lot can change during that period.
Injuries and dip in form can affect players, hence even many players who partook in the qualification matches might not end up being picked. We look at 5 players who might probably enter the squad going to Russia.
1. Alhassan Ibrahim
The former Wikki Tourists forward who now plays for FK Austria Wien in the Austrian Football Bundesliga on loan from Akwa United F.C. has been one of Gernot Rohr favorite players. He has featured for friendly matches with Super Eagles and was impressive.
Should in case any current forward gets injured or drops in form, Alhassan “Muazam” Ibrahim could end up gatecrashing the party to Russia.
2. Francis Uzoho
Francis Odinaka Uzoho, a goalkeeper, was a member of the Golden Eaglet squad that won the
2013 FIFA U-17 World Cup in UAE.
He signed up for Deportivo La Coruna in January 2017. Uzoho made is debut for Deportivo this month, keeping a clean sheet and becoming the second youngest ever debutant in La Liga. He has been regularly scouted by Rohr and might make up the goalkeepers going to Russia.
3. Kayode Olarenwaju
Kayode Olarenwaju had a splendid season last year at Austria Wien. He was quickly snapped up by Manchester City. He had a decent game on his debut of Nigeria in March 2017. If he keeps up with his great form, he might end up in the squad too.
4. Victor Osimhen
There’s no doubt that Gernot Rohr has always been a fan of the former Under 17 golden boot winner. The Wolfsburg lad is really a good striker and Gernot Rohr sees Osimhen as a a long term prospect for Nigeria and could give he exposure by taking him to the World Cup in Russia, well who knows?
5. Paul Onuachu
The 6 ft 7′ tall striker who plays for Danish club FC Midtjylland has been in good form for his club. Ever since joining the club in 2012, he has gone on to establish himself as a top striker in the Danish league. He strings of astonishing display has definitely caught the eye of the coach Gernot Rohr. He has never been called up to represent Nigeria, so it would come as a big surprise if he ends up on the plane to Russia. But who knows, right?
