The much talked about “Oyibo Wall ” central defence partnership of William Troost-Ekong and Leon Balogun in the heart of Nigeria’s defence has been played down by Ekong.
In an interview with the official website of the Nigeria Football Federation ( NFF) , Ekong admitted that the quality of Leon Balogun has no doubt helped his the partnership, but he also pointed out that he can also dovetail nicely with any other player.
” I enjoy being with the team, and working with quality players. Playing alongside someone like Leon Balogun with his quality has definitely helped, but I would feel just as comfortable playing next to anyone now”, he told the nff.com
Despite Ekong’s statement, the last time he paired with Chidozie Awaziem didn’t go too well as Nigeria for the first time lost 0-2 to South Africa in the AFCON 2019 Qualifiers.
However there are indications that one among the pair of himself and Balogun will be rested by coach Gernot Rohr for the game against Algeria tomorrow, but they are expected to line up together against Argentina.
