A late goal from Monsuru Bashiru gave Nigeria’s CAF Champions League representative MFM FC a 2-1 win over visiting MC Algiers of Algeria in a CAF Champions League group stage qualifiers clash decided in Lagos.
Chijioke Akuneto put the Nigerians ahead from the spot in the 34th minute after picking himself up from a foul committed on him in the box of the visitors. Six minutes after his goal Ospino Egbe rescued the Nigerians with a great save to keep scores in favour of the Nigerians going into the half time break.
Ten minutes after the restart MC Algiers drew level courtesy of a poor defensive mix up in the back line of MFM, which gifted Amachi Aziovez the chance to peg the Nigerians back and bring scores level.
Six minutes to the end of the game Monsuru Bashiru scored a stunner out of nothing to hand the Nigerians a 2-1 lead. A goal good enough to win the goal of the preliminary games of the tournament due to the nature of the strike.
The Nigerians will defend their slim advantage in Algeria in a little less than two weeks from now for a spot in the group stages of the money spinning CAF premier cup competition.
