Former Nigeria national team goalkeeper Emmanuel Babayaro has lashed out at Nigerians blaming goalkeeper Femi Thomas for the three goals conceded yesterday in the Super Eagles B 2-3 loss to Atletico Madrid.
Femi Thomas was blamed by some section of the football loving populace of Nigeria but Babayaro who was a goalkeeper in his days as a footballer has jumped to the defence of the Enugu Rangers goalkeeper.
Babayaro in an exclusive chat with Owngoalnigeria.com said Thomas was left exposed for the three goals he conceded yesterday and if he had saved any of the efforts it would have been a bonus to his performance.
” Strange that the Atletico Madrid goalkeeper conceded from range and nobody his questioning his positioning but Thomas who was left exposed is being blamed by some people “, Babayaro said.
” For the first goal he was badly exposed, where were the defenders? In one on one situation with the ball at the feet of the striker there is very little a rushing goalkeeper can do. Two of the three goals were scored through one on one situation. Where were the defenders of the team?
” The goal scored by Fernando Torres was a free header in the box. The easiest way to beat a goalkeeper is when you head the ball in the box especially when the player is unmarked. It’s unfair to blame Thomas for any of the goals conceded yesterday “, Babayaro concluded.
