Former Plateau United forward Philip Azango scored his second Europa League goal to power Slovakian side AS Trencin past Polish side Gornik Zabrze 4-1, which secure them qualification to the next phase of the qualifiers.
Azango scored the winner in the first leg played in Poland last week and with scores at 2-0, the left footed forward killed off any chance of a late rally by the visitors with a third goal for Trencin in the 59th minute.
The win see Trencin progress on a 5-1 aggregate score and they are now one round away from qualifying for the group stages of Europe’s second rated Cup Championship. A feat which will no doubt be a major achievement for the modest side.
Three Nigerians in Philip Azango, Rueben Yem and Abdul Zubairu were on for Trencin from the start with Azango substituted to a standing ovation with four minutes left to play in the game. The fourth Nigerian in the squad for the game Emeka Umeh was introduced late into time added on.
Aside the quartet who made the rooster for today’s game, the club also has two other Nigerians on their books in Super Eagles B forward Peter Eneji and ex Akwa United midfielder Yamen Tenton.
