The decision of coach Gernot Rohr to start the duo of Victor Osimhen and his former Nigeria U17 teammate Samuel Chukwueze in the Super Eagles friendly game against Uganda has been explained by the coach.
Osimhen was preferred ahead of Isaac Success in attack while Chukwueze started on the right with Rohr handing a rest to Samuel Kalu who played in the AFCON 2019 Qualifiers against South Africa.
The duo were teammates for the Nigeria U17 team at the World Youth Championship in 2013 and after a slow start to their respective careers in Europe, they have both found their feet as they are now regular first team players.
Chukwueze is enjoying a breakthrough season at Spanish side Villarreal while Osimhen has found his rhythm in Belgium since joining Charleroi on loan from German side Wolfsburg in the summer.
” They showed very good combination in training. Osimhen has been with us and knows how we play while Chukwueze is new but exciting. You can’t say they did badly in the half they played”, Rohr said.
