Born in Germany to a Nigerian father and a German mother, the 31 year old had the option of playing for both nations but rather opt to represent Germany, where he ended up making the German squad for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.

Aogo could easily have represented Nigeria as then Super Eagles coach Amodu Shuaibu who died two years ago did all he could to persuade the left full back but he stuck to his guns on representing Germany.

In a video posted by Omasports TV, Aogo who has since lost favour in the sight of the German national team selectors revealed the real reason why he decided on representing Germany ahead of Nigeria at senior level.

” My mother is German and my father is Nigerian. That’s two cultures mixed together and it was not always easy. I could have played for Nigeria then but after consultation with my father, I decided against it. Because till this moment, I’ve only visited Nigeria once as at that time we had not so much opportunity to travel to Nigeria ‎to experience my root as we did not have enough money and deep in my heart, I feel German “, he said.
