It appears the coach of the senior national team of Nigeria Gernot Rohr has settled for the duo of Odion Ighalo and Victor Osimhen as his top strikers at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations which will take place in Egypt.
With the coach still keen on bolstering his options in attack, Owngoalnigeria.com has picked five strikers who could gatecrash the squad as back up to the aforementioned duo when camping begin for the Africa soccer showpiece.
Isaac Success – At a point in time the Watford forward was the first choice back up to Ighalo but his lack of endeavor in training and even when he is introduced as a substitute saw him fall down the pecking order.
A poor goal return of just three goals this season even though he is getting regular game time has not help his case but he is however still in the running for a spot in the team.
Simy Nwankwo – The fact that he isn’t having the best of season with Serie B side Crotone pushed him out of reckoning despite making the squad to the World Cup in Russia. He however still has the physique to help the Nigerian team play in a different way if the need arises. His chances of making the team is however slim.
Blessing Eleke : His inclusion on the standby list by coach Gernot Rohr for a recent Super Eagles games raised eyebrows but the coach has been tracking the 22 year old for a while and his goal return of 11 goals in 21 games this season has put him in the frame for a chance to make the squad for the Africa Cup of Nations.
He stands at an impressive height of 1.90m, something that Rohr fancies a lot mainly due to his love for his 4-2-3-1 formation and a tall forward will be the perfect fit for the system.
Paul Onuachu : Inconsistency has kept the 24 year old out of the Super Eagles squad with coach Gernot Rohr confirming his inactivity at a time at Danish side FC Midtjylland cost him a spot in one of the squad released for a qualifiers. What is not in doubt is his ability to score goals for fun with as many as 14 already this season from 25 games.
Maybe he will make the squad for the dead rubber AFCON 2019 Qualifiers game against Seychelles in March according to sources close to the Franco-German coach of the Nigerian team.
Stephen Odey : Trained with the Super Eagles squad a couple of times while playing for MFM FC. His stock has risen considerably well the past few months with ten goals from 26 games for Swiss side FC Zurich. 21 year old Odey is a player Gernot Rohr likes a lot and with his impressive tally in front of goal, it will be wrong not to include him among players who could gate crash the squad for the AFCON 2019.
