Coach of the senior national team of Nigeria Gernot Rohr is in Niger Republic watching the Africa U20 Cup of Nations where the Nigerian team are currently through to the semi-final of the tournament after finishing top of their group.
The 1-0 win over host Niger Republic means the Nigerian team finished top with seven points while South Africa finished as runners up courtesy of their 1-0 win over Burundi, which helped them to five points.
Both nations are through to the semi-final and the World Youth Championship in Poland later this year and they will both be in action on Tuesday with Nigeria taking on Mali while South Africa will trade tackles with Senegal for a spot in the final.
For the Nigerian team four players have caught the eyes of the Franco-German coach of the senior team and they could be in line for a call up to the team for the dead rubber AFCON 2019 Qualifiers tie against Seychelles.
Owngoalnigeria.com reveals the list of the players Rohr has shown interest in so far.
1. Olawale Oremade : Standing at an impressive height of over six feet tall. His command of his goal area and firm grip particularly when dealing with crosses has impressed Rohr and with the coach searching for young alternatives in goal. The shot stopper might get a chance to train with the squad ahead of the clash against Seychelles.
2. Igho Ogbu : Strong, quick and uncompromising in tackles. He looks like the sort of player Rohr need to shore up the Eagles backline and if all goes according to plan the Rosenborg U19 ace could also train with the Eagles when preparations begin for the Seychelles game.
3. Valentine Ozornwafor : The search for a left footed central defender has proved elusive for a while but with the emergence of Ozornwafor it’s partially over. Reads and intercept play with ease. He is also solid in aerial duels and although not the quickest he has not been found wanting against pacy forward. Rohr love what he has seen in him so far.
4. Mike Zaruma : Not one of the player rated by many prior to the tournament but the right back has won the heart of Rohr with his constant foray down the right flank. Full of energy he is very well in the mould of a modern day full back. Solid in tackles and not scared of joining the attack. A chance to train with the Super Eagles could be on the menu.
