Super Eagles Captain Mikel – I’m In My Best Shape In A Long While

Captain of the Super Eagles of Nigeria John Obi Mikel says his present physical condition is the best he has enjoyed for while after two impressive performances for English Championship side Middlesbrough.

Mikel was largely rated as the best player on the pitch last weekend when Boro were held to a 1-1 draw by Leeds United with many going as far as saying he is way above the quality of players in the English second division.

The game was his first 90 minutes for his new club after lasting 75 minutes in his first league game which they lost 2-3 to West Bromwich Albion. A sign of his return to full fitness after an injury hit season in what was his final season in China with Tianjin Teda.

Last season he missed close to ten games due to injuries and fitness issues but since terminating his deal by mutual consent and joining Boro on a free contract he is yet to suffer a relapse of the problems that he suffered in China.

Speaking after the game against Leeds United, Mikel said his physical shape is about his best for a while, a statement which could mean a return to the senior national team of Nigeria, a team he hasn’t played for since the World Cup in Russia.

” The intensity has tested me to the limits and that has impacted on my fitness level. I’m feeling really good with my body. I’ve not felt this way in a while. It’s my joy to keep playing and helping the team”, he told .
