Fomer Super Eagles left back Celestine Babayaro has added his voice to calls for captain of the Nigeria U23 team Azubuike Okechukwu to be handed a chance with the senior national team of Nigeria.

Babayaro made the call after watching the Istanbul Basaksehir midfielder in action for the Nigeria U23 against Sudan, where he stood head and shoulders above every player on the pitch as Nigeria run out 5-0 winners to book a place at the Africa U23 Cup of Nations.

Speaking to Owngoalnigeria.com after the game, the former Chelsea defender who was part of the team that won gold for Nigeria at the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta said Okechukwu showed enough in the game to warrant a Super Eagles spot.

“I like the captain of the Nigeria U23 ( Azubuike Okechukwu) for several reasons. He has a very good energy level and plays simple passes mostly to the feet of players. The grounds he covers is massive, it’s like he is not tired of winning, receiving and delivering passes. He’s clearly above this level”, Babayaro told Owngoalnigeria.com.

” The senior national team has several options in midfield but it won’t be bad to give him a shot there too. He looks like someone who won’t disappoint because tactically he looks a very good player with good technical knowledge of his role”.
