Top Underdogs That May Shock Us in the 2025/26 European Football Season

Football Clubs That Will Likely Defy Expectations This Season

The 2025/2026 football season kicks off with plenty of anticipation across Europe’s top leagues. Fans expect the big guys like Manchester City, Bayern Munich, and Real Madrid to dominate as usual. But history shows underdogs often steal the spotlight. Think Leicester City’s crazy Premier League title in 2015/16 or Girona’s top-four finish in La Liga two seasons ago.

This year, several clubs have the potential to be disruptors. They’re driven by shrewd transfers, tactical overhauls, and stubborn teams. In this piece, we’ll pay attention to expert analysis and preseason form to pick some of these clubs. Via promotion momentum or managerial magic, they promise to turn title battles, European spots, and relegation wars on their head.

Premier League Dark Horses on the Rise

Promoted sides tend to cause chaos in the Premier League. The 2025/2026 newcomers fall well into that category. Leeds United, Burnley, and Sunderland qualified through their gritty Championship campaigns, Leeds topping the table by virtue of their goal difference. They give new energy and can upset mid-table regulars.

Leeds United

Leeds rebuilt under Daniel Farke following relegation. They possess a balanced attack led by Daniel James and Wilfried Gnonto. Their high press is ideally suited to the top division. They also lost none of their five preseason games so they appear decently prepared. Most people predict a mid-table finish, but their depth could see them push for European spots.

Sunderland

The Black Cats return after a playoff triumph, fueled by young talents like Wilson Isidor. They actually had the youngest average starting 11 in last season’s Championship (23 years and 324 days). They mix counter-attacking flair with attacking intent. While they’ll be outsiders in most matches, their youthful energy could spring surprises.

Burnley

Built on a possession-based approach and the defensive solidity that saw them concede just 16 goals in the Championship, Burnley returns to the top flight this year determined to shed the “yo-yo club” tag. They aim to survive and do it with flair.

Bundesliga Dark Horses

In the Bundesliga, Eintracht Frankfurt stunned in 2024/25 to finish third. Even losing Omar Marmoush mid-season to Manchester City didn’t do much. Their strong Expected Goals metrics and shrewd acquisition of Jonathan Burkardt keep them firmly in “best of the rest” discussions behind Bayern.

The RB Leipzig team has been redesigned after the squad changes that took place recently. Under coach Ole Werner, who joined in July 2025, they couple high-intensity pressing with quick transitions and flexible shapes. Their financial backing and European exposure put them above other rivals.

Serie A Upsets

Como 1907 is the most likely wager for Serie A’s dark horse in 2025/2026. Having emerged after a strong Serie B campaign, Como lavished money on transfers, beating competition during the summer transfer window. Under Cesc Fàbregas’ management, their fluid 4-3-3 formation emphasizes possession, potentially earning points against top sides.

Key factors for Como’s rise:

  • Star signings: High-profile additions bolster the attack.
  • Tactical innovation: Fàbregas’ Barcelona-inspired playstyle adapts well.
  • Momentum from promotion: Four-game winning streak in preseason.

This could mirror Bologna’s unexpected Champions League qualification last season.

Aside from Como, Fiorentina could surprise the league too. Their squad is full of enthusiasm and can be unpredictable. They play aggressively and have an energetic approach, so they can beat expectations.

La Liga Teams Poised for Breakthroughs

La Liga’s hierarchy faces threats from clubs like Athletic Bilbao and Villarreal. Under Ernesto Valverde, Athletic have a settled squad rooted in local identity. Remember Nico Williams is locked down on a long-term deal. They have both unity and youthful flair. Their organizational discipline makes them strong outsiders for European qualification and perhaps even a top-four finish.

Villarreal have experience and emerging talents. Thanks to this, there’s a structured yet fluid attack. They have Champions League know-how under their belt and a tactical system primed for both domestic and continental success. They are likely to once again disrupt expectations.

These elements position them to exceed modest expectations, per fixture analyses.

Wrapping Up

As the 2025/2026 campaigns begin, teams like Leeds, Eintracht Frankfurt and Como can prove how football can be unpredictable. Their likely success lies in how they can plan and stay together. Honestly, there is also the element of luck that every underdog needs. Early indications, however, point to the possibility that there may indeed be heroic stints. Ultimately, defying expectations is what the game is all about. As fans, we’ll be on our seats for the drama as it unfolds.

Chelle Ponders Dropping Lookman From Super Eagles Squad For World Cup Qualifiers

0

Head coach of the senior national team of Nigeria Eric Chelle is considering dropping Ademola Lookman from the Super Eagles squad for the upcoming world cup qualifiers games against Rwanda and South Africa respectively.

Lookman has not been involved in pre season or competitive game for Atalanta owing to a transfer imbroglio that saw him go on strike in his bid to force a move to Inter Milan.

A source close to the coach exclusively revealed that there will be no emotions in picking the final list of players for both games, due to the crucial nature of the ties. He said Lookman will be communicated to if there is a decision to drop him for the games.

Back at Atalanta, he has been training separately from the rest of the team and reports say he will be integrated back into the team if he is still at the still at the club, when the transfer window closes on the 1st of September.

Ineligible Player: Why Decision On Point Deduction From South Africa Is Yet To Be Made Public – FIFA

0

A spokesman for world football governing body FIFA has revealed the reason behind the delay in making public the judgement on South Africa fielding an ineligible player in the world cup qualifiers, OwnGoalNigeria.com reports.

South Africa fielded an ineligible player in Teboho Mokoena in the 2-0 win over Lesotho during the last round of games , when he was supposed to be suspended after picking two yellow cards in previous games.

Acts like that is usually accompanied with a three points, three goals deduction but in the case of South Africa there has been a delay in the incidence, which happened in March and with the next round of games in September there is still no update on the judgement.

Ace Nigerian journalist Osasu Obayiuwana spoke with a spokesman of FIFA on the delay and he gave his explanation. “The matter should be before the FIFA disciplinary committee. They don’t tell the administration what cases they have before it, as they are independent.”, he explained.

“We will only hear of their decision when they have made it. If they have not made a pronouncement before South Africa’s next match in September, I will encourage you to ask why a decision has not been taken on this matter,” the FIFA source said.

One of the opponents of the senior national team of Nigeria in the upcoming world cup qualifiers South Africa are facing a tough time in the areas of getting key players ready for the game against Nigeria.

The group leaders will take on Lesotho away before hosting the Super Eagles in the next round of games. Mudau is reportedly pushing for a move away from Sundowns, which has led to him allegedly skipping training and matches. The right-back situation is critical, as Mudau is widely regarded as the best in the PSL.
