0

Wolverhampton Wanderers of England shot stopper Carl Ikeme distinguished himself during the Super Eagles shooting practice against goalkeppers.

Expected to start in goal for Nigeria against Zambia in Ndola. Ikeme dwarfed his competitors Ikechukwu Ezenwa and Emmanuel Daniel during the shooting drills making more saves than any of the aforementioned duo.

Ikeme stopped around 65% of shots directed at him, displaying reflexes and good body stretch which could come handy against Zambia in Ndola, when the Eagles begin their quest to be at World Cup 2018 in Russia.

Ikechukwu Ezenwa wasn’t far off but still lacks a bit behind Emmanuel Daniel, who was very impressive. The Rio 2016 shot stopper came second during the drills among the goalkepper stopping around 45% of shots directed at him.

However judging by the team session, Daniel will most likely not make the match day squad as coach Gernot Rohr will most likely stick to the duo of Ezenwa and Ikeme.

Head coach of the Super Eagles of Nigeria Gernot Rohr had an hour of technical training session with the Eagles during their last training in Nigeria, before their departure for Ndola, Zambia.

Owngoalnigeria.com correspondent who watched the session among other things, that can’t be revealed due to technical reasons reports, that during the set piece drills Rohr was by far impressed by the aerial abilities of Godwin Obaje ahead of other players.

Obaje connected with almost all his headers, not so surprising as he scored four headed goals in the recently concluded Nigeria Premier League season where he finished as top scorer with 18 goals.

Defender William Troost Ekong was also solid in the air, connecting powerfully with most of the deliveries aimed at him, whilr Brown Ideye missed the most headers during the session.

Captain John Obi Mikel was average with his head during the drill, defender Elderson Echiejile displayed unbelievable leap and strength in headers putting the goalkeppers under pressure with almost all his headers.

The highly rated duo of Alex Iwobi and Kelechi Iheanacho didn’t do too well with their headers, no thanks to their inferior height against some tall defenders in the team.

The Super Eagles of Nigeria had a shooting session yesterday as manager Gernot Rohr tried to bring accuracy to the shooting abilities of the lads ahead of tomorrow’s clash against Zambia in Ndola.

As usual Owngoalnigeria.com was at the session and can from our observations, the shooting abilities of some Super Eagles players still need lot of works judging by their perfromances.

William Troost Ekong and Kenneth Omeruo were wayward with their effort, as some will say as expected from defenders but Musa Mohammed excelled with almost all of his effort on target.

New invitee Uche Agbo also had decent efforts that were all on target and among the midfielders captain Obi Mikel came top with almost all his efforts troubling the goalkeppers.

Anderson Esiti and Eddy Onazi were also on point with their efforts but, same can’t be said about Elderson Echiejile and Chisom Egbuchulam, while among the forwards Alex Iwobi and Moses Simon had weak efforts which was sometimes wayward.

Kelechi Iheanacho could easily pass as the best when it comes to hitting the ball from range for the Eagles with Godwing Obaje not too far from him. Brown Ideye was good in using technique instead of power as instructed by the coach.

The open training session of the Zambian team witnessed by Owngoalnigeria.com correspondent saw the coach deploy extra men in midfield with the duo of Chisamba Lungu and captain Rainford Kalaba playing in a more defensive role.

Nyirenda is applying the approach to frustrate Nigeria in the midddle before the ball gets to the dreaded trio of Brown Ideye, Kelechi Iheanacho and Alex Iwobi.

Primarily they plan to give the Nigerian midfield duo of Mikel Obi and Eddy Onazi less time and space to make use of the ball, when they are in possession to stop them from spraying passes to the forwards.

It appears the Zambians have settled to catch the Eagles on the break as the coach primarily focused on quick break during the training session watched by Owngoalnigeria.com.

Although experienced forward Winston Kalengo and Collins Mbesuma are favourite to start against Nigeria on Sunday, Daka is being lined up for the role of an impact substitute in the game.

The Chipolopolo will rely on the strength and physical nature of either Mbesuma or Kalengo in the early stages of the game to wear down the Nigerians, before bringing on the pacy Daka, to stretch the defence of the Eagles which would have been made weary by either of the aforementioned duo.
