I Didn’t Ask For $120,000 A Month Pay – Reported First Choice For Super Eagles Job Opens Up

0

Following the appointment of Eric Chelle as the new coach of the senior national team of Nigeria Toni Conceição who was widely seen as the front runner for the job has opened up on losing out in the race, OwnGoalNigeria.com reports.

Chelle was appointed on a short term deal reportedely worth $55,000 a month, with an immediate task to put the Super Eagles world cup qualifiers back on track after the team’s failure to win in any of their first four games in the series.

Reports emerged that Chelle wasn’t the first option of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) rather Portuguese coach Toni Conceição. The report claimed it was the demand of $120,000 a month as pay that made the NFF to shelve the idea of appointing the former coach of Cameroon.

A statement signed by the representative of the coach however denied the report saying while contacts took place with his client, at no point did he make such demands as claimed.

“Our attention has been drawn to recent reports in the Nigeria media claiming that Toni Conceiçao demanded a salary of $120,000 per month to assume the role of Head Coach for the Nigeria National Team. We wish to categorically state that these reports are entirely false and should be disregarded.

“While there was indeed some interest expressed, no concrete discussions or agreements were reached between Toni Conceiçao and the relevant authorities. The circulating figures and claims are purely speculative and lack any factual basis”.

Will Super Eagles Land In 2026 World Cup With New Coach Eric Chelle?

0

The news of the new gaffer Eric Chelle for the hot and cold Super Eagles came with multiplier effects on the pains of the edgy fans whose ears would always want to hear good news about their dear team.

All the stakeholders, except the Soldier of fortunes in the apex football house as well as the National Sports Commission, who were involved in this “sham” and “shame” are simply not happy with this appointment.

The delays, that very long, were that the football bodies were looking for the best voice to scream victory from the dugouts but alas, it was a Malian, whose voice was faintly heard from the Eagles of Mali’s bench they finally settled for.

The bodies promised the fans an established coach with results to show for it, a world class coach, most definitely a European, so to speak, but ended up with an African.

Names were bandied, some of the tested European coaches with African experiences, but all that were only ruses as Chelle, an unknown figure in international football even in the African front, proved to be the best among the bigger names in the eyes of the selectors.

Chelle, 47, was sacked for poor results for his native Mali for crashing their hopes of reaching their first ever World Cup by a tripartite arrangement to be hosted by USA, Mexico and Canada in 2026.

What actually was the rationale behind this appointment when Eagles badly needed quality to navigate through the turbulent waters of Africa to reach the tri-nation arrangement?

Politics, personal interests and underhand businesses?

At this time when the Eagles’ HMS (His Majesty Ship) is sinking?

Who’s toying with our football that seems to be the only unifying umbrella in this severe economic crisis eating the country deep?

But in the face of all these concerns, getting Eagles to the three countries, is a task that must be done and is Chelle the captain that will steer the troubled ship clear?

Eagles sit duck lamely on fifth position in the six-team log with miserly three points and anything less than winning the remaining six games will leave Eagles groaning in pains with broken wings back in Lagos.

That’s the task poor Chelle has signed up for with the backing of the soldiers of fortune. The pictures will continue to get clearer for the “innocent” young gaffer with time.

But does he have the capacity to nick this difficult ticket to the tri-nations?

Admirably qualified, armed with UEFA B certificate and quite young and seemingly enthusiastic to get down to work but where’s the “Europeaness” in him to command respect from the Euro Army?

Born to a European, French father and a Malian mother in Abidjan, Ivory Coast, to which Chelle holds a French passport and huge European playing experience, Chelle will have a lot in his hands to prove.

In as much as Eagles are a massive ship to steer for a surprise Chelle choice, the Eagles’ gaffer who failed to fly with the Mali Eagles, Chelle could just well surprise himself by going all the way.

Yes, it could be argued that Chelle lacks what it takes to do the job but the timing of his appointment could change things for the better for him.

His inherited bruised Eagles will do everything possible to land at the Mundial after bitterly missing out in the Qatari train, the first ever in the Middle East and will have no choice than to work with the young gaffer to get the Imperial Super Eagles’ Airlines flying again.

That’s the positive side of the disappointing Chelle appointment that stakeholders should hold close to their chests.

Deals, dirty, shady deals may have been done and sealed on the appointment but then our national pride remains at stake and work must be done.

Chelle may as well turn a hero, when the World Cup qualifiers wrap up in October to which he penned a six-month contract.

NFF Dares FIFA With Plans For Friendly Game Between Super Eagles And Russia

0

The senior national team of Nigeria have been listed among the three African nations that Russia will play against in a friendly game later this year, OwnGoalNigeria.com understands.

Russia have been banned by FIFA from all international games after the invasion of Ukraine by their government. The ban was announced by FIFA in February 2022.

“FIFA and UEFA have today decided together that all Russian teams, whether national representative teams or club teams, shall be suspended from participation in both FIFA and UEFA competitions until further notice,” read a statement by FIFA at the time.

However the host of the 2018 world cup are putting finishing touches to three games, which will be against Senegal, Guinea and Nigeria at the end of the football season in Europe according to Le Monde. The games could likely draw some sanctions from FIFA.

While there is no confirmation on if the duo of Guinea and Senegal have accepted the proposal, the NFF is believed to have already agreed terms for the game, believing that it will not be of any consequence as other African teams have also played against Russia since their ban.

Other African nations who have played Russia since their ban include Cameroon, Kenya, and the Egypt U23s, according to Soccerway.

Super Eagles Star Plays First Game After One-Year Injury Layoff

Nigeria international defender Zaidu Sanusi has made his return from injury after spending a year on the sidelines owing to the injury he picked up last season at his Portuguese side FC Porto, OwnGoalNigeria.com reports.

The 27 year old ruptured his ACL in February last year, and after two games for the B team of Porto which were meant to help build his fitness and sharpness. He made his first team return yesterday in their 0-1 defeat to Sporting Lisbon in the Portuguese Cup.

He was introduced in the 61st minute of the defeat and came through without any setback. He is now expected to be involved on Wednesday when they take on Nacional in the league. Porto are currently second on the table, just one point behind the leaders Sporting Lisbon.

His return to full fitness also means he will be available for selection by the new coach of the senior national team of Nigeria Eric Chelle, when he calls players up for the world cup qualifiers games in March.

Chelle was appointed yesterday as the substantive coach of the Super Eagles on an initial short term deal, which will cover the period of the world cup qualifiers that will end in October.

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has confirmed the appointment of the former coach of Mali Eric Chelle as the new coach of the senior national team of Nigeria.

Per what we exclusively gathered, the new coach will sign a short term contract to cover the games of the world cup qualifiers which will round up in October.

He will bring two of his assistants, who will be paid $5,000 a month, while he goes home with $50,000 a month. An amount which is way less than what he currently earns at Algerian side MC Oran.

The Nigerian duo of Daniel Ogunmodede and Fidelis Ilechukwu will also be a part of his technical crew , and he will also double as their boss for the CHAN Championship which will be prosecuted by players playing in the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL).

Former Super Eagles Striker Demands Answers On How NFF Picked Chelle As New Coach

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has confirmed the appointment of the former coach of Mali Eric Chelle as the new coach of the senior national team of Nigeria.

Eguavoen will now return to his role as the technical director of the football house with Chelle taking his spot as the coach of the team for the world cup qualifiers, which resumes in March.

His appointment has drawn a reaction from former Super Eagles striker Victor Anichebe , who in a post on social media platform Instagram wondered how the coach was handed the job.

“Would love to know what process was carried out when selecting this manager. That being said good luck to him the pressure he will face managing the super eagles is a heavy one. All the best”, he posted.

Chelle’s managerial career has seen him take charge of 159 games where he won 70, drew 42 and lost 70. He was fired as the coach of Mali in June last year after two poor results in the world cup qualifiers, where they were beaten 1-2 by Ghana at home before drawing 0-0 away to ten man Madagascar.

Lowdown On New Super Eagles Coach Eric Chelle, Style Of Play And Why He Was Sacked By Mali

0

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has announced the former coach of Mali Eric Chelle as the new coach of the senior national team of Nigeria ahead of the resumption of the world cup qualifiers, OwnGoalNigeria.com reports.

Chelle was the top pick of the technical committee of the NFF from a three man shortlist, with the coach getting the backing of the NFF president Ibrahim Musa Gusau this time around after rejecting his appointment in July last year.

But who is Eric Chelle?

He was born in the Ivory Coast to a French father and a Malian mother, he played his entire professional career in France and won six caps for Mali between 2003 and 2006.

His previous job as coach before getting the job of the head coach of Mali includes working as youth coach at Marseille Consolat, before coaching spells at Martigues and Boulogne in the French lower divisions.

In the race to be appointed as the coach of Mali in 2022, the 47 year old was favoured ahead of German duo which includes the former coach of the senior national team of Nigeria Gernot Rohr and also Winfred Schafer formerly of Cameroon.

Chelle replaced Mohammed Magassouba as head coach of Mali and led the team for two years until he was dismissed in June last year after Mali were held to a goalless draw by 10-man Madagascar in a Group I World Cup qualifier in Johannesburg. Prior to the draw, Mali squandered a one-goal lead to lose 2-1 to the Black Stars, who had been struggling in their recent games.

Both results saw them drop to 4th in their group. Four points behind surprise group leaders Comoros leading to a breakdown in his relationship with the power brokers in the Malian FA, and subsequently led to his sack. The players of the team were heavily opposed to his exit with many threatening to quit if the decision wasn’t reversed.

An apostle of free flowing football using wingers in a 4-4-2 formation, the former defender who holds a UEFA Pro license is however no slave to a particular tactics, but in all of his formation he is more at home with playing with two strikers.

Throughout his stay as the coach of Mali the team played with a two man attack as he is a staunch believer of the statement that attack is the best form of defense. His idea yielded good results with the team keeping ten clean sheets under his guide.

In 22 games as the coach of Mali , the team won 14 games, drew five and lost three times. They scored 36 goals and conceded 12 in return.
