“My dad was big into football too – he used to play and now coaches, so he has encouraged me a lot.

“My family background is that my mum is Nigerian, and my dad is Jamaican and Guyanese. In school I did a lot of athletics, and sprinting, but I was good at long jump; that was one of my specialties.”

This was despite several offers received from top clubs after his recovery. The midfielder general spoke to us about what motivated him to join Gençlerbirliği despite it being a second division club.

The conversations he had with the coaching staff that influenced his decision, how he think the move will have an impact on his career trajectory and how important the support from his family, agent and friends was in making this decision.

Navigating Doubt and Opportunity

Oghenekaro Etebo faced scepticism when he decided to join Gençlerbirliği, a second division club in Turkey.

“A lot of people were calling me, asking, ‘Why would you go to a second division club in Turkey?'” he told SportsBoom.com.

During his time training with the club, he had full access to their facilities and felt no issues. Hence, he felt there was a need for payback.

“From January till the end of the season, I didn’t pay for anything, and I trained with the group—100%.”

He said the coach had shared valuable insights with him before he left for Germany.

 The Importance of Respect

Etebo spoke about remembering the conversation he had with the previous coach, Sinan Kaloglu, who influenced his decision as well.

“He emphasized the importance of respecting the club.”

“He said that when a club opens its doors to you, a lot of people don’t know what happens behind the scenes. You have to respect them.”

“So, the coach told me that: ‘Etebo, I’d tell you something, even before you sign for any team, or before you go anywhere. Just remember that these guys are the ones that looked after you. So, it’s very important.”

He also touched on the influence of the words the club doctor spoke in his decision-making.

“Because I remember, every time the doctor would say to me; even if it is 6 months or 1 year, you have to wear this jersey, cos’ we looked after you, and all that.”

 A Legacy of Support

Before joining, Etebo received offers from various teams, including first division sides.

“I had options before I came here, I received offers from Israel and first division sides in Turkey.”

But he was also impressed by the support shown by the side and the deal offered to him.

“They knew I hadn’t played for a year. The money wasn’t that big, but it was just for me to be on the pitch and show that I’m back.”

Ultimately, it resulted in him signing a one-plus-one contract with Gençlerbirliği, noting, “It was so easy because they didn’t even put a buy-out clause.

“They really wanted to support me,” he said.

Etebo recognizes the club’s rich history and the values shown even from times past.

“They have a legacy of big players coming in, and they want to be known as the club that brought you back when you were down.”

He remembers the late Isaac Promise, a fellow Nigerian, as a point of reference, who remains highly respected within the club.

“They love him here so much, and they really respect him,” he concluded.

Impact on Career, Family and Friends in Support

The dynamic midfielder spoke about the impact the move will have on his career as well.

“The most important thing for me now is to play, and that I would do with the team.”

He also touched on the support from his agent in making the decision after he informed him.

“My family’s support was also crucial in getting the deal done.”

I Want To Play For Super Eagles – Chelsea Defender Adarabioyo Tells Eguavoen Ahead Of AFCON Qualifiers

0

The international future of Chelsea defender Tosin Adarabioyo is settled following his decision to commit to Nigeria ahead of England where he was a junior international at several levels, OwnGoalNigeria.com reports.

Nigeria have been keen on getting the 27 year old to commit to the Super Eagles for the past three years after stamping his authority as a top defender in the English Premier League, he was however hoping for a call up to the semi team of England.

Adarabioyo who joined Chelsea on a free transfer from Fulham in the summer has played in their last two games in the league , where the helped them to back to back wins against Bournemouth and West Ham respectively.

UK based Nigeria football administrator David Doherty in an interview on Nigerian television station TVC monitored by our editorial team confirmed the decision of Tosin, and called it a welcome development to the team.

Doherty said Tosin’s inclusion will no doubt create more competition in the central defense of the team, which presently has the likes of William Troost-Ekong, Kenneth Omeruo, Semi Ajayi and Calvin Bassey. Three of whom are in their 30’s.

He also criticized the statement made by the former captain of the Nigerian team John Obi Mikel, who was critical of players committing to Nigeria in their late 20’s, saying there is no rule by FIFA that says players should switch nationality at a certain age.

In his words Tosin who turned 27 yesterday is approaching his prime age for any defender and the fact that he plays for a top team will increase the profile of the senior national team of Nigeria.

Head coach of the senior national team of Nigeria Austine Eguavoen is a huge admirer of FC Porto striker Samuel Omorodion, who is still eligible for Nigeria despite winning the gold medal of the recently concluded Olympic games with the Spanish team, OwnGoalNigeria.com reports.

Eguavoen who extended his message of goodwill to the 20 year old after his feat with the Spanish team is hopeful that the forward will have a change of mind, and opt for the Super Eagles per what we gathered.

Omorodion has put behind the disappointment of a failed move to English Premier League side Chelsea in the summer transfer window by making the best of his move to FC Porto from Spanish side Atletico Madrid.

He has found the back of the net three times in as many games helping FC Porto to stay in touch with the league leaders as they are second with just three points behind the leaders after six games.

The task will however be an uphill one for Eguavoen as the forward has already given his reasons why he prefers to play for Spain ahead of Nigeria last year.

“Spain has given me the opportunity, and I am very grateful for it. I don’t think about Nigeria. My goal is to debut with the senior side and build my career here in Spain,” Omorodion stated, as quoted by AS.

Nigeria international goalkeeper Maduka Okoye has explained the reason behind conceding three goals in Udinese’s 0-3 defeat in the hands of Roma last weekend in the Italian Serie A, OwnGoalNigeria.com reports.

Okoye has been in splendid form this season for Udinese who have been unbeaten in all tournaments heading into last weekend game, where they were hammered 3-0.

The Nigerian was still one of the best players for his team in the defeat making two big saves in the first half, and wasn’t at fault for any of the goal his team conceded in what can be said to be a reality check on their fine start to the season.

“We started the season well, but today was a difficult match”, he told the official website of the club after the game.

“We played against a great team like Roma. We didn’t do enough, we were slow in moving and communicating,” he added.

“We are disappointed, but we need to look ahead immediately, Salernitana and Inter are two great opportunities. We have to stay focused.”
