New Super Eagles Coach: Legendary Super Eagles Coach Begins Campaign For Siasia As Eguavoen’s Replacement

0

The search for a new coach for the senior national team of Nigeria is expected to begin in earnest following the expiration of the two games mandate given to Austine Eguavoen, OwnGoalNigeria.com reports.

Eguavoen was handed the task of handling the team in the AFCON qualifiers against Benin Republic and Rwanda in interim capacity and the team picked up four points out of a possible six, with a sound 3-0 win over Benin in Uyo followed up with a 0-0 draw against Rwanda in Kigali yesterday.

Contracted for both games following the breakdown in talks with German coach Bruno Labbadia for the vacant role of head coach, Eguavoen confirmed the end of his mandate as coach but left the door opened for a possible return due to his role as the technical director of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF).

“I have been given a mandate to handle two games. I will want to say I am very pleased with the boys and again thanks to the NFF leadership and all the boys supported me in terms of discipline and working hard”, he told Pius Idoko after the game.

“It ends today, which is the two games mandate. I can’t talk about Libya because I haven’t been told but however I can talk about it a little bit incase we have another coach, we can talk about it I want to be closer to the team as it should be and I can give inside story and inside information that we need to be able to overcome Libya”.

His statement has led to talks about a new substantive coach for the team and former coach of the Clemens Westerhoff has given his opinion on who should be handed the role.

The coach who can arguably be termed one of the best in the history of Nigerian football after leading them to three AFCONs, where the team finished second (1990) , third (1992) and first (1994) consecutively also hold the honor of the first coach to qualify Nigeria for the world cup.

He said Samson Siasia who recently returned from a ban placed on him by FIFA due to his relationship with a match agent famous for fixing games, should be handed the role and given the necessary support.

“I called him last month to greet him for his birthday and also to celebrate with him for the end of his five-year ban”, Westerhof told Sports Village Square at his house in Arnhem in the Netherlands

“He has done it before and I think he can still do it.”

Why We Didn’t Score Against Rwanda- Super Eagles Number 10 Fisayo Dele-Bashiru Explains

0

Lazio midfielder Fisayo Dele-Bashiru has given his opinion on the Super Eagles 0-0 draw against Rwanda in their second game in the AFCON qualifiers played in Kigali earlier today.

Fisayo started today’s game after coming on as a substitute in Saturday’s 3-0 win over Benin Republic, but unlike over the weekend they failed to find a breakthrough despite creating the most chances, and having as many as nine shots on target.

Explaining the new Super Eagles number 10 blamed it on their failure to make the numerous chances that came their way count, but said it’s better that they picked a point and didn’t concede.

“I think we played well and of course it’s going to be difficult playing them away because they have their fans cheering them on and of course there are all kinds of circumstances that we have to consider”, he said in an interview with Pius Idoko made available to OwnGoalNigeria.com editorial team.

” With everything considered we played really well and had a lot of chances that we couldn’t convert and that is why I think the game ended 0-0.

” We can take the positive from it. We didn’t concede and we gained a point in the AFCON qualifiers. You know it’s not the result we wanted but it’s not a bad result.

“Yeah we spoke a little bit about it after the game. I am not sure why it didn’t go in. It’s just sometimes you are lucky, sometimes you are not and today was just one of those days and anything we threw at them it just didn’t go in so like I said it’s important that we didn’t lose the game and we didn’t concede any goal”.

Eguavoen Quits His Role As Super Eagles Interim Coach – My Mandate Was For Two Games

0

The interim coach of the senior national team of Nigeria Austine Eguavoen says his job with the senior national team of Nigeria is done after the team’s 0-0 draw against Rwanda in the AFCON qualifiers in Kigali, OwnGoalNigeria.com reports.

Eguavoen was handed the role of the interim coach following a breakdown in talks with German coach Bruno Labbadia, and was tasked with leading the team for the AFCON 2025 qualifiers games against Benin Republic and Rwanda, and after leading the team to a win against Benin and a draw against Rwanda picking four out of a possible six points, he has announced his departure as coach.

Speaking at the airport in an interview with Pius Idoko made available to our editorial team, the coach refused to be drawn into the team’s preparation for their game in October against Libya, insisting that his mandate was for two games only.

“I have been given a mandate to handle two games. I will want to say I am very pleased with the boys and again thanks to the NFF leadership and all the boys supported me in terms of discipline and working hard”, he said.

“It ends today, which is the two games mandate. I can’t talk about Libya because I haven’t been told but however I can talk about it a little bit incase we have another coach, we can talk about it I want to be closer to the team as it should be and I can give inside story and inside information that we need to be able to overcome Libya.

” No team is a pushover anymore but with this spirit that these boys have exhibited and from what I have seen we have a very bright future”.

AFCON 2025 Qualifiers: Wasteful Super Eagles Fail To Beat Rwanda In Kigali

0

The Super Eagles of Nigeria were held to a 0-0 draw by Rwanda in their second game of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, OwnGoalNigeria.com reports.

Fresh from beating Benin Republic 3-0 in their opening game of the series, the Austine Eguavoen led team failed to make use of the chances that came their way in both halves of the game.

Ademola Lookman surging run was prime to be the opening goal of the game but he slammed his effort against the onrushing goalkeeper, and moments later he has a goal controversially ruled out for an offside.

Lookman reacted quicker to a flick by Semi Ajayi from a throw in to head home at the far post, the goal was ruled out but replays showed that it should have counted as he was well onside as against the ruling by the assistant referee who made the call.

Victor Boniface crashed his effort in the box onto the bar and also had another effort cleared off the line after good work by Fisayo Dele-Bashiru.

Substitute Victor Osimhen had three separate chances to bury the game but his tame effort was easily gathered.

Super Eagles Starting XI Against Rwanda – Osimhen Starts From The Bench Again, Fisayo In, Iwobi Out

0

The lineup of the players who will start for the senior national team of Nigeria in today’s AFCON qualifiers game against Rwanda has been exclusively revealed to OwnGoalNigeria.com.

Interim head coach of the team Austine Eguavoen started his reign with a 3-0 win over Benin Republic on Saturday, and ahead of today’s game he has made it clear that the team is going all out for a win.

To that extent the coach stucked with the same 3-4-3 formation that worked to good effect against Benin, but like we exclusively reported made some changes to the starting lineup.

While the back five remained unchanged, the coach altered his two man midfield with Fisayo Dele-Bashiru who came in as a second half substitute getting the nod to start in place of Alex Iwobi.

Team’s top striker Victor Osimhen is still not fit enough to start with Victor Boniface who had a rather below par performance getting another chance to lead the line with Ademola Lookman and Samuel Chukwueze.

Starting XI:

Stanley Nwabali

Ola Aina

Bruno Onyemaechi

William Troost-Ekong

Semi Ajayi

Calvin Bassey

Fisayo Dele-Bashiru

Wilfred Ndidi

Samuel Chukwueze

Ademola Lookman

Victor Boniface

Ex Super Eagles Coach Finidi Warns Eguavoen On How He Was Treated By NFF

0

The former coach of the senior national team of Nigeria Finidi George has revealed the way he was treated by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) in the event that led to his departure from his role in June, OwnGoalNigeria.com reports.

Finidi lasted just two games following his permanent appointment as replacement for Jose Peseiro after the AFCON. He left after playing a draw against South Africa in Uyo and losing 1-2 away to Benin Republic in the world cup qualifiers.

Super Eagles on Saturday put the disappointment behind by beating Benin Republic 4-0 in Uyo under interim coach Austine Eguavoen, who is the technical director of the team.

Speaking on his final days as coach, Finidi who is now the coach of Nigeria Premier League side Rivers United revealed how he was badly treated by the Nigeria Football team (NFF) making him to throw in the towel.

“When you don’t win games there is pressure. We were expected to draw one game and win one that would have been much better because the difference in points wouldn’t have been much but if we drew against South Africa and lose to Benin Republic that’s not good enough”, he told Nigeria Info in a radio interview.

“For me not having the support of the federation (NFF) I just felt was not good enough. They would have given me that support and we would have moved on because the result is the same, the result will not change but the support from the Federation would have been much better to allow me to do the job, to allow me to stay but I didn’t get that from the federation only for me to hear that they are looking for a new coach.

His statement should serve as a warning to Eguavoen, who is currently at the helm with some section already calling for him to be made the permanent coach of the team. Particularly the part where he said he felt disrespected.

“At that moment I felt it was a big disrespect from my own part and I won’t sit down there and be watching what is happening, what they decide and what they didn’t decide so I had to quit.

” We had a meeting with the minister and I was expecting in that meeting they would have told me coach we support you despite the result. We have to look for a way forward for better results and that would have eased a little bit my own thinking but when I didn’t hear that from them only for me to hear that a day before my meeting they already held a meeting they are looking for a new coach. A foreign coach which I was not informed.

” Too many things going behind me which I didn’t know and in front of me nobody came to say we support you. So I just felt I was not needed , I was not given the fullest support and I will not be in a place where I am not wanted. I am not hungry so I had to leave.”

Super Eagles Players Came For World Cup Qualifiers Games Unfit – Finidi Explains Why Eguavoen Did Better

0

The former coach of the senior national team of Nigeria Finidi George says the players who he handed in the world cup qualifiers games against South Africa and Benin Republic were largely not at their best for both games, OwnGoalNigeria.com reports.

Finidi”s reign as the substantive coach of the Nigerian team ended after two games, which was the 1-1 draw against South Africa and the 1-2 defeat to Benin Republic both in the world cup qualifiers, which saw the team dropped to 5th in their group.

It led to the exit of the coach who is now at the helm at Nigeria Professional Football League side Rivers United. Three months on from the defeat the Nigerian team blew away the same opponent 3-0 in Uyo on Saturday.

Reacting to the performance of the team which is now under caretaker coach Austine Eguavoen, Finidi explained that the present coach is fortunate to have the players at this stage of the season unlike when he was in charge, when they were already through with the season and came for the games from their various holiday spot.

“I wished they had played that way when I was the coach that didn’t happen and that of yesterday from the result I think they must have performed so well. I am a Nigerian and I wish the team all the best but my focal point is not the Super Eagles for now”, Finidi said in a radio interview monitored by our editorial team.

“ I am happy that they won the game if they had put up same performance I think we won have defeated Benin Republic a month ago or two months ago. But it’s understandable because I took the team when they were on holiday.

“Some of the players came from vacation for that South Africa and Benin Republic game. You play football with fitness and it’s quite unfortunate that I met those players when they were already in vacation and you could see from those two games the fitness level was low compared to the match they played yesterday, where most of the players they had three, four games in the season. So they came very fresh and they could give their all.

He went further to lament that despite knowing his that they will require time to hit full fitness some of the players still didn’t resume early enough for the coaches to improve their level before the game, leaving him with little or nothing to do about their physical condition ahead of the game.

“ Of course when players come to camp two days before the game against South Africa that was when some players arrived from Dubai and other places. You cannot play on that high level when you are coming from vacation. It’s quite strange but that was the situation.

“Any coach that would have been in that situation would have had same because that was why I talked about indiscipline. You saw the Euros where players finished the league and they went into camp. In our own situation players travel first , had two, three weeks vacation. Even if you are training it’s not going to be the same because you are eating, you are drinking and from Dubai and other places like Spain you people travel to Nigeria and even late.

“ They didn’t come when they were supposed to come. They even came late , three days to the game , so there is nothing I could do. We saw that in the match against South Africa and the Benin Republic match. So without fitness you cannot play no matter how good you are.

He rounded up by saying if the game against Benin that led to his sack was played during the season, the result would have definitely been better and he would have probably still be in charge of the team.

“ It’s quite unfortunate that we had to play that game when the league has ended and most players didn’t show up when they were supposed to show up. You can’t eat your cake and have it so that was the result we had. This time around I think the players are fit enough so definitely we are going to beat Benin Republic at any given time if the players are fit.

“We have better quality players than Benin Republic. If it didn’t happen then there was a reason for it. For me it’s very clear now that the players were not fit enough and there was nothing I could do because if you come to camp, two, three days before a World Cup Qualifier there is nothing a coach can do physically.

“You just manage them and do your tactics and see how far they can go in the game, but if you are not fit you cannot play on that high intensity and the result showed. I think going forward the team is going to improve because the season is on.

“If they have to play games during the season, they are definitely going to do well and win games. It’s quite unfortunate but that’s the reality of my time in the Super Eagles. Quite unfortunate that I didn’t take the players during the season we would have had different results and maybe I would have still be there”.

Super Eagles Star Explains Why Boniface Isn’t Scoring For The Team Like He Is Doing At Bayer Leverkusen

0

Victor Boniface was among one of the players who didn’t perform to their best expected level when the Super Eagles defeated Benin Republic 3-0 on Saturday in the AFCON 2025 qualifiers, OwnGoalNigeria.com reports.

Boniface was subbed off after 73 minutes for Victor Osimhen who scored Nigeria’s second goal in the huge win at the Godswill Akpabio stadium in Uyo. It means the Bayer Leverkusen forward is yet to score for Nigeria.

It is no doubt a source of concern because of the way he was prolific for Belgium side USG and also Bayer Leverkusen last season in the German Bundesliga. Last season in just 23 league games he scored 14 goals with eight assists.

Explaining the reason behind why the 23 year old has been drawing blanks for the Super Eagles, a senior player in the team said it’s down to formation and lately his fitness isn’t at its best yet after the lengthy injury that cost him a spot in the team for the AFCON.

” It’s a combination of the style and needing time to get the rhythm. When Jose Peseiro was the coach we played a one man attack in ten game that he played and for his debut he was behind the main striker. At Leverkusen he plays as the top striker in a two man attack, so you see the style is different”, he told OwnGoalNigeria.com.

” Also don’t forget playing in the national team setup requires time since it’s not a day to day thing like playing for your club. Ademola Lookman didn’t hit it until after spending an extended time with the team in camp before the AFCON. Today he is on fire, so let’s be patient with Boniface and not forget that he only recently returned from a lengthy layoff. Not at his best physical condition yet”.

Super Eagles Were Not That Spectacular Against Us- Captain Of Benin Republic Plays Down 0-3 Defeat

0

The captain of the senior national team of Benin Republic Steve Mounie says the 0-3 defeat his team suffered in the hands of the Super Eagles wasn’t a true reflection of the game, OwnGoalNigeria.com reports.

Mounie was a part of the Benin Republic team who were humbled by the Super Eagles in Uyo with a brace from Ademola Lookman and a solitary strike from Victor Osimhen, condemning them to defeat against the team they defeated three months ago in the world cup qualifiers.

Speaking ahead of their second game in the AFCON qualifiers against Libya tomorrow, the 29 year old Augsburg forward says the score line flatters the Super Eagles as it wasn’t a true reflection of the game.

“The 3-0 against Nigeria was not an easy defeat. We would not have expected that going to Nigeria. Afterwards, we also have to look at the content of the match. It is a heavy result on paper but it does not totally reflect the true nature of the match.”

His opinion was the same as the coach of the team Gernot Rohr who also said for large spell of the game, they looked most likely to score before Osimhen scored the second goal and the third by Lookman.

“The 3-0 against Nigeria? We were in a good position. We had to wait until the 47th minute to concede. We didn’t concede many chances. We weren’t bad at all. Until the 75th minute we could have hoped to equalise. We did everything we could. We weren’t ridiculous. The result doesn’t reflect what happened on the pitch.”
