5) The Executive Committee also resolved that a Stakeholders’ Forum be convened in a few weeks’ time, to deliberate on amendments to the current NFF Statutes, in conjunction with world football-governing body, FIFA.

6) While appreciating the fact that preparation of teams involved in the Olympic Games fall squarely within the purview of the Federal Ministry of Sports Development, the Executive Committee stated unequivocally that it will provide robust support, within the room allowed it, to the Senior Women National Team, Super Falcons, to adequately prepare for this year’s Women’s Olympic Football Tournament, taking place in France 24th July – 11th August.

Finidi Left Disappointed As Minister For Sports Approve Request To Hire New Coach For Super Eagles

0

The minister for sports senator John Enoh has approved a proposal from the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) to hire a new coach for the team,OwnGoalNigeria.com can exclusively reveal.

Earlier today a meeting of the hierarchy of the football house and the minister which lasted for nearly four hours reached a conclusion for the overhauling of the technical crew of the team led by Finidi George.

Finidi has been told he will step aside for a new coach, who is expected to be a foreigner as the country bid to get their world cup qualifiers campaign back on track after a stuttering start to the qualifiers.

Newly appointed Finidi failed to pick up a win in the recently concluded games with a draw against South Africa in Uyo and a 1-2 defeat to Benin Republic. The results leaves them 5th on the six team group, four points behind leaders Rwanda.

As expected, the coach wasn’t all smiles when he walked out of the office and shunned approach from the media to speak on the outcome of the meeting. He has been told to either accept working under a new coach or get the boot less than two months into his one year deal as coach.

The NFF can use the performance clause in his deal to terminate his contract in the event that he refuse to accept the terms agreed between the NFF and the minister.

Alex Iwobi silences Argentina with a nutmeg and a hammer (2017)

This particular friendly game was in a sense a David versus Goliath type of battle. Although Nigeria were no pushovers, Argentina were the clear favorites to win. Coming in from behind when Argentina were already two goals up at first half before Kelechi Iheanacho and Iwobi leveled the game seven minutes into the second half.

Ahmed Musa’s stunner against Iceland (2018 World Cup):

Nigerians were elated after Ahmed Musa scored goals against world cup novices, Iceland, after a disappointing loss to Croatia. This loss to Croatia meant that Nigeria faced elimination should they lose to Iceland.

Musa stepped up in the second half, controlling a looping Victor Moses cross that terminated with an exceptional volley. As if that wasn’t enough for Man-of-the-Match Musa, the 75th minute proved to be the final nail in the coffin for Iceland when he mazed his way past Iceland’s keeper and picked his spot on goal.

Sunday Oliseh’s Rocket against Spain (1998 World Cup):

The 1998 Super Eagles team might have been the most iconic of all time, but the man at the center was Sunday Oliseh. The towering midfielder was a wall against attacking midfielders and strikers, but he wasn’t known much for scoring.

For Nigeria’s first match of the 1998 World Cup against Spain, the baton fell on Oliseh, who while jot typically a scorer, knew how to convert the fatal clearance made by Spain. The game was already 2-2, and with 12 minutes to time, a fatal mistake by Spain’s Fernando Hierro was just what Oliseh needed to seal the winner. Oliseh caught it on the half-volley and thundered a low strike just inside the post past stunned Spain keeper Andoni Zubizarreta.

Rashidi Yekini’s opener in the 1994 AFCON final:

Thought by many as the Super Eagles’ deadliest striker, Rashidi “The Bull” Yekini broke the deadlock in the 1994 AFCON final against Zambia.

The game was at draw, a tense affair, but Yekini rose to the occasion. With a powerful header from a set piece, he volleyed the ball into the back of the net, sending Naija fans into jubilation and breaking Zambia’s heart.

Amokachi Versus Argentina (1994 World Cup):

The 1994 World Cup was a tournament of Nigerian brilliance, and that particular Super Eagles team has been hailed as the best of all time. In a second-round clash against Argentina, Daniel Amokachi produced a moment of individual brilliance.

Finidi George’s seals the win against Greece (1994 World Cup):

Nigeria looked confident going into the game against Greece to move past the group stages. In what turned out to be the most iconic celebration of the tournament, George slipped past defenders to receive a cross from Amuneke and notch the ball just above the Greek stopper.

Sealing the win, George went on to perform his legendary urinating dog post-goal celebration.

Nwankwo Kanu’s finisher Against Brazil in the 1996 Atlanta Olympics:

Nigeria made headlines in 1996 as the first African team to win an Olympic gold medal. Kanu scored two goals against Brazil – a dramatic late equalizer that made it 3-3.

It was Kanu’s last effort however that proved his mastery of the ball. Kanu received a throw-in from Jay Jay Okocha right inside the penalty area. With his back to the keeper, Kanu casually flicked the ball up, deceived the Brazilian keeper, and nutmegged a defender, firing in the “Golden Goal”. That secured a 4-3 victory for the Super Eagles.

Jay-Jay Okocha’s free-kick masterpiece against Cameroon (2000 AFCON):

Jay-Jay Okocha is known for the spectacular, and nothing showcased his masterclass than in the 2000 AFCON semis against arch-rivals Cameroon. Okocha stepped up to a stunning free-kick just outside the box, sending the ball curling away from the wall and dipping viciously towards the far corner.

Cameroonian goalkeeper, Carlos Kameni, could only watch in despair as the ball nestled into the net, while Naija fans went into a frenzy.

Samson Siasia’s audacious chip against Algeria (1984 AFCON):

Samson Siasia remains one of Nigeria’s most prolific strikers. Aster AFCON glory in 1994, the Super Eagles went to USA for the FIFA ’94 World Cup.

Super Eagles No Longer Super Since I Was Sacked As Coach – Rohr

0

Head coach of the senior national team of Benin Republic Gernot Rohr who led his team to an impressive 2-1 win over the senior national team of Nigeria has given his opinion on the Nigerian team, two year after he was sacked as coach of the team, OwnGoalNigeria.com reports.

The coach who took over the reins at Benin less than a year ago has his team firmly on course for a spot in the 2026 world cup as they are on the same points with group leaders Rwanda, unlike Nigeria who are currently 5th in the six team group.

Since his exit a total of three coaches in Austine Eguavoen, Jose Peseiro and now Finidi George have handled the team, but with less success compared to when the German was in charge.

Speaking on the Nigerian team that he coached for five years , the coach who was unceremoniously sacked in 2021 said the team hasn’t changed much since his exit, hence not much has happened by way of making them a force.

” Still a team with very good talented players with many of them coming into the team during my time as coach. Not many things have changed since I was asked to go. So you can say they have been super but it’s still a very good team”, the coach said.

” Very few teams in Africa can boast of players like the Super Eagles but you have to use the players correctly. At the AFCON they did well playing a style that didn’t bring their best to the fore. I think they are still a team with the chance to make it to the world cup”, he concluded.

Pitso – Okocha Pushed For Me To Be Coach Of Super Eagles Ahead Of Finidi

0

Decorated African coach Pitso Mosimane has revealed how close he came to becoming the new coach of the senior national team of Nigeria following the exit of Jose Peseiro as coach of the team in February, OwnGoalNigeria.com reports.

Mosimane has never hidden his desire to be the coach of the Nigerian team after his performances on the African continent and also in Saudi Arabia. He led Mamelodi Sundowns to the CAF Champions League trophy, a feat he repeated with Al Ahly of Egypt.

The one time coach of the senior national team of South Africa who recently left his role as coach of Saudi Arabia side Abha FC following their relegation has now revealed how former Nigeria international Austine Okocha pushed for him to get the Super Eagles job, before the appointment of Finidi George as the substantive coach of the team one month ago.

“Super Eagles, what a team they have,” said Mosimane, whose face lit up with excitement when talking about the quality of the West Africans.

“The calls were coming, the talks were there. Jay Jay Okocha was leading this thing and begging me,” said Mosimane on Metro FM’s Sports Night Amplified.

“There was never a deal on the table, it was just talks. This one calls and calls from the Federation. In football, the contract must be on the table and sign it. If that is not really happening, there is no deal,” he added.

“You can never deny a chance to coach Osimhen and all those guys are top talent in the world. Nigeria struggles with the system and how they play”.

The five time winner of the South Africa Premier League went further to give tips to the present coach of the team on how to get the best out of the team after a poor run in the world cup qualifiers, where they are 5th in their group, four point behind three other teams in Rwanda , South Africa and Benin Republic respectively.

“When you have many of good players, it is nearly the same like Brazil, but where is the World Cup?

“When you have too much talent and the coach doesn’t even know who to play and who to play, the coach becomes impatient that the game is not looking good, then you make changes because you’ve got somebody else on the bench,” said Mosimane about the Super Eagles who are yet to win a game in the qualifiers series.

“When you have a settled team, like France, [you know] it is Kylian Mbappe who is going to play no matter what. Ousman Dembele can dribble everybody, but Mbappe is going to play. It is not a question mark.”

Awoniyi Disagrees With Ex Super Eagles Defender On Keeping Finidi As Coach Of Super Eagles

0

The future of the head coach of the senior national team of Nigeria Finidi George has been a huge topic of discussion after the team’s poor showing at the recently concluded round of games in the world cup qualifiers, OwnGoalNigeria.com reports.

Super Eagles drew 1-1 with South Africa in Uyo before losing 1-2 to Benin Republic at their adopted home ground in Cote d’Ivoire.  The results saw them drop to 5th in their group, a whooping four points behind the three leading teams in the group Rwanda, South Africa and Benin Republic respectively.

They are also two points behind fourth placed Lesotho, and only just one point behind the bottom team Zimbabwe. Super Eagles are searching for their first win after four games.

Already the NFF are locked in a meeting with the minister for sports to review the position of the coach, who was made the substantive coach of the team following the exit of Jose Peseiro upon the expiration of his contract in February.

Awoniyi is however backing the coach to turn the fortunes of the team around calling for patience.

“We want to keep progressing and it’s good to welcome a new coach”, he told SportsBoom.

“For me, it’s always important to keep on wanting to do more. That is the way you have to be, in order to get better.”

His take in sharp contrast to that of former Super Eagles defender Sam Sodje who says the coach has shown that he doesn’t have the capabilities to move the team forward, and hence should be given the axe before it gets top late.

“It is not about Finidi George but getting what we want and yes sacking him may not be a bad idea because we need to go to the World Cup. Finidi George was good as a player and legend but he is not good enough as a coach.”

Exclusive – NFF Keen On Toni Conceição As New Super Eagles Boss, Hands New Role To Finidi

0

The top hierarchy of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) will later today meet with the minister for sports senator John Enoh for a review of the country’s poor performance at the recently concluded world cup qualifiers, OwnGoalNigeria.com reports.

The meeting was called by minister after the Super Eagles failed to win any of their games by drawing 1-1 to South Africa before losing 1-2 to Benin Republic. It means their qualification for the world cup is now hanging on a thread.

It has also put the position of the head coach of the team Finidi George in doubt with the NFF now looking for additional support for the newly appointed coach. Already a plan to have a foreign technical adviser who is experienced on the African continent has been proposed.

Per what we exclusively gathered, former coach of Cameroon Toni Conceição is the anointed choice and he will be the new technical adviser while Finidi will keep his job as the head coach of the team alongside his assistants.

Conceição was among the most qualified candidates who applied for the job, but the NFF decided to hand it to Finidi who was an assistant to former coach Jose Peseiro for the 20 months that he was in charge of the team. That decision hasn’t worked out.

Today’s meeting will see the NFF propose the idea to the minister for his approval in order for the coach to resume almost immediately ahead of the next round of international games, which is the AFCON qualifiers in September.
