He May Not Return To South Africa After AFCON – Chippa United Coach Express Fears Over New Super Eagles Goalkeeper

0

The head coach of Chippa United Morgan Mammila has all but hinted that Stanley Nwabali will be heading to the Africa Cup of Nations with the senior national team of Nigeria after a visit by the head coach of the team Jose Peseiro.

Nigeria are currently having a crisis in goal and as first reported by OwnGoalNigeria.com in October, Nwabali who joined Chippa United a little over a year ago is seen by the coach of the Nigerian team as one option who could challenge present first choice goalkeeper Francis Uzoho.

Peseiro visited the club and watched the 27 year old in goal against Golden Arrows where he kept his seventh clean sheet of the season as they run out 2-0 winners. Mammila says the coach was impressed with the shot stopper’s display in the game.

“It means a lot to the entire club, having a national team coach coming to South Africa to see a player,” said Mammila after Chippa recorded their fourth league win this season against Abafana Bes’Thende.

“They had lunch, and dinner with me and had a chat with the players, it means a lot. When we were chatting, I could see that there is not that much difference (between us and Peseiro in coaching terms), the only thing is how you say it.

“Overall, I grabbed one of two things from him because when we were talking to each other you get one or two you can use in the future. What a gentleman.

“I’m happy, and he will sleep peacefully himself that at least he came to Chippa.”

He went further to claim that the goalkeeper is AFCON bound with the Super Eagles saying his fears is that top teams will snatch him from them after the tournament due to what he expects him to put up in Cote d’Ivoire next year.

“The way Stanley plays, he is in (AFCON finals squad),” said Mammila.

“I expect him to be at AFCON. The only problem is, we are going to lose Stanley. If he plays like this at AFCON, I’m telling you Stanley may not come back [from] the AFCON.

Light In Key Areas, Loaded In Attack – Ex Chelsea Star Says Super Eagles Not Balanced Enough To Win AFCON

0

With the Super Eagles of Nigeria heading into next year Africa Cup of Nations with the aim of winning it for the first time in ten years, former Chelsea and Super Eagles left back Celestine Babayaro has expressed his fears about the team winning the tournament in Cote d’Ivoire.

Nigeria will go into the tournament as one of the favorites for the title owing largely to the fact that they have the most potent attackers in the continent banging goals for top teams in the top leagues in Europe.

Victor Osimhen of Napoli leads the way with Victor Boniface of Bayer Leverkusen not forgetting Terem Moffi at Nice and Sadiq Umar who his back in among the goals at LaLiga side Real Sociedad.

Despite that Babayaro says the fact that the team can’t boast of such quality in other areas will likely hamper their ambition of wanting to lift the trophy.

” You can’t win a tournament with attackers only. There is a popular cliche that attackers win you games but defenders win you titles. The current Super Eagles team is loaded in attack but light in quality elsewhere”, he told OwnGoalNigeria.com.

” From a good goalkeeper which they don’t seem to have and a lack of quality defenders and midfielders. I can tell you the team isn’t balanced enough to win in the Africa Cup of Nations. It is the painful truth that must be said”, he concluded.

Taribo West Urges Peseiro To Bring Back “Oyibo Wall” As Super Eagles Centre Back Pair For AFCON

0

The coach of the senior national team of Nigeria Jose Peseiro has been told to go back to pairing William Troost-Ekong and Leon Balogun in the heart of the Super Eagles defence at the Africa Cup of Nations, OwnGoalNigeria.com reports.

Peseiro appears to have move on from the duo with the duo of Semi Ajayi and Calvin Bassey now his preferred option at centre back while Kenneth Omeruo sits on the bench as their back up.

Speaking on how Super Eagles can be effective at the AFCON former defender of the Nigerian team Taribo West says it’s about time the coach bring back the duo who achieved a whole lot together from 2016 to 2018.

” They (Ekong and Balogun) are still playing and doing well for their teams. That means they can still be useful and if you see that the players who took their spot are struggling then you know there is experience lacking.

” It’s up to the coach but from the outside where I am, going back to what has worked in the past to help you isn’t a bad idea and when you go to the AFCON you need experience. You don’t gamble at that level”, he rounded up saying in an interview monitored by the editorial team of OwnGoalNigeria.com.

From Lagos To PSV – All Eyes On Young Nigerian Defender On Playing For Super Eagles Or Netherlands

0

When PSV played out a 1-1 draw against Norwegian side Bodo/Glimt in the Europa League, not many were aware that a Nigerian made his debut for the Dutch side in the game.

His name doesn’t sound Nigerian and it’s safe to say it’s why not many bothered about digging out more information about the then 17 year old Emmanuel van de Blaak. Now at the age of 18 more information are beginning to come out.

Although he represents the Dutch team at youth level, he is actually born to Nigerian parents in Lagos and still remains eligible for the senior national team of Nigeria but that will depend on his progress with the Dutch side.

The 18 year old who started off his career as a striker rose from JEKA in Breda to the youth team of Willem II and after around five years he moved to PSV starting off from the youth team Jong PSV.

When he made his debut, it was two years into his stay at the club and he is in the list of the  youngest debutant in the history of the club behind the likes of Jetro Williams and Zakaria Bakkali among others following his debut at the age of 17 years and 9 months.

A serious knee injury almost derailed his rise at the club, but they rather showed their faith in him by handing him a new deal that runs till the summer of 2025. A move he said has made it imperative for him to repay the faith the club showed in him.

“I heard a crack and immediately knew that something was wrong. It was a tough period for me personally, but PSV helped me through it well. The contract extension during my injury was great. I felt really good. I now have to pay forward the trust that the club has given me”, van de Blaak said after his debut last year.

His international future will no doubt spark a tug of war if he succeed in stamping his authority in the first team of PSV. He is presently doing extremely well for the U21 of the club and has played in 16 games in all competitions this season.

Ajax Number 10 Could Be Super Eagles Joker At AFCON – Peseiro Told

0

Head coach of the senior national team of Nigeria Jose Peseiro has been told to consider adding Ajax forward Chuba Akpom to his squad for the Africa Cup of Nations, which will take place in Cote d’Ivoire next year.

After a slow start to life at the Dutch League giant he has found his feet with six goals in his last seven games for the club. He scored five in the league and one in the Europa League.

Akpom represented England at various youth levels but switched his international future to Nigeria three years ago. Since that switch the 28 year old hasn’t been called up to the senior national team of Nigeria.

He was prime for a first time call up last season after hitting 29 goals for Middlesbrough in the English Championship, but the fact that he wasn’t in possession of a Nigerian passport brought about a halt in the plans.

Peseiro has always referenced the Ajax number 10 as a player in his sight and he has now been told to hand the former Arsenal teen sensation a spot in his team, because of the fact that he will make them unpredictable.

” Akpom could be the joker and I am not joking. You really don’t know how he do it but he is always around the box, free in space to hit home crosses or balls in the box. That’s a rare threat as he is deadly with his head as well despite not being the tallest. Peseiro has to consider him for the Super Eagles”, Netherland based Nigerian Adeyemi Philip who works with Ajax online told OwnGoalNigeria.com.

Paul Merson Warns Chelsea On The Danger Of Signing Victor Osimhen From Napoli

0

Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson says he is wary of Chelsea’s going all out to splash big on Nigeria international forward Victor Osimhen, who was yesterday crowned the Africa footballer of the year, OwnGoalNigeria.com report.

According to Football Transfers , Chelsea’s owner Todd Boehly is willing to pay whatever it takes to sign the 24 year old who is currently having a contract stand off with Napoli over extending his deal, which will have a year to run at the end of this season.

Boehly is said to have the backing of the coach of the club Mauricio Pochettino on the signing of the striker in January with the team desperate to have a top striker to ease their goal scoring issues, that has seen them dropped to 12th on the log of the English Premier League.

Merson is however warning them to approach the move with caution as the Nigerian isn’t proven yet. He warned them about making the same mistake they did with several players at the club at the moment.

Not minding the fact that the Nigerian finished as top scorer in the Serie A last season with 26 goals and also powered his team to their first league title in 33 years, Merson warned he still isn’t what can be referred to as a finished article for a team like Chelsea.

While discussing what Chelsea need to do in the January transfer window he said: “Chelsea have to get a centre forward in January. How many teams do anything without a centre forward?

“There is Victor Osimhen at Napoli. However, I feel that is a gamble because he would be coming into the hardest league in the world. How many times have we seen someone rip it up in another country only to struggle in the Premier League? We’ve seen it too many times.”

I Will Play For Super Eagles At The World Cup – Bournemouth Goal Scorer Against Man Utd Opens Up

0

The international future of Bournemouth top scorer Dominic Solanke Ayodele Solanke was once again on the menu after his goal in his team’s 3-0 win over Manchester United at the weekend in the English Premier League, OwnGoalNigeria.com reports.

Solanke headed home the second goal in the shock win at Old Trafford taking his goal count for the season to eight in sixteen games. Only four players have scored more goals than him this season after the round of games played so far.

Born to a Nigerian father and an English mother, the 27 year old represented England at various youth levels but he is still eligible for Nigeria at senior level with only one senior cap to his name for England.

Asked about the possibility of having him play for the Super Eagles, a source close to the player said it is a discussion that will make sense after the Africa Cup of Nations because of the timing.

He said a more proper timeline is having him play for the Super Eagles at the next world cup in 2026, around when he will be 30 years old citing that the lure of playing in the world cup isn’t one that can be wished away.

The one thing he admitted that will still keep him in the loop for a discussion to play for Nigeria will be if he continues to bang in the goals at a top level and an England call up didn’t happen.
