Maduka Okoye Sparks Fresh Row Over Super Eagles Number 1 Spot With Commanding Debut For Udinese

0

The former first choice goalkeeper of the senior national team of Nigeria Maduka Okoye has taken a huge step towards reclaiming his spot in the team with a commanding display for Udinese despite ending on the losing side.

Udinese were beaten 1-2 by Cagliari in extra time in the Coppa Italia, a game which the Nigerian started in goal and played the entire duration of the game for his debut for the team he joined in the summer transfer window from English Championship side Watford.

Okoye made six saves in the games, three in the first half to keep his team in the game before they took the lead but Cagliari drew level with a free kick from range. They rounded up their win win a late winner in extra time with virtually the last kick of the game.

It could have been worse for Udinese but Okoye pulled another tremendous double stop to frustrate the visitors from extending their lead. He made a total of seven saves, the highest ever by a goalkeeper of the team in the history of the tournament.

The 24 year old who was handed a recall to the senior national team of Nigeria for the last round of friendly games against Saudi Arabia and Mozambique respectively, has now sparked a debate about handing him back his role.

Head coach of the Nigerian team Jose Peseiro has stood by the goalkeeper but handed the number one spot to Francis Uzoho, who has come under severe fire for his back to back errors in the recent games.

No doubt, the return of Okoye has reignited the fight to be number one especially if he gets more  games in the league with Uzoho struggling to get game time at Cyprus side Omonia Nicosia.

He Is Like Mikel – Peseiro Willing To Hand Nigeria U20 Star Super Eagles Spot After Shinning For Esperance

0

Head coach of the senior national team of Nigeria Jose Peseiro is willing to give a spot to Nigeria U20 midfielder Onuche Ogbelu in the team after his exciting performances for Esperance of Tunisia in the African Football League.

A member of the Nigeria U20 team to the WAFU and the Africa Cup of Nations, Ogbelu moved to the Tunisian side three weeks ago in a deal made possible after a recommendation from the coach of the Nigeria U20 team Ladan Bosso.

He has won the heart of many with his exciting performances in the Africa Football League, where his team missed out on a spot in the final by losing 5-4 on penalties to Wydad after 1-0 win that left them tied on an aggregate score of 2-2.

Ogbelu impressed so much that many say he is the closest thing to former Super Eagles midfielder and Chelsea star John Obi Mikel. That performance is likely to earn him a spot in the senior national team of Nigeria.

OwnGoalNigeria.com exclusively gathered that Ogbelu won the heart of head coach of the Nigerian team Peseiro, who has already told his associates that he will be open to handing him a spot in the midfield of the team.

Our source said, the coach has been a fan of the 20 year old since the WAFU tournament and also the AFCON. However it was his move to Esperance where he held his own against the best players in Africa that has convinced the coach to give him a chance.

Newly capped Nigeria international defender Jordan Torunarigha has given his opinion on Augsburg defender Felix Uduokhai switching nationality from Germany to Nigeria,OwnGoalNigeria.com reports.

He is now hoping to be included in the sqaud for the World Cup qualifiers which begins in November, and possibly the Africa Cup of Nations next year.

Pressed on what his message will be to Uduokhai who hasn’t made his senior debut for Germany despite enjoying regular run of games in the Bundesliga, the Gent defender said it’s up to his former Germany youth international teammate to make up his mind .

“I cannot speak for them, they have to decide for themselves. I am not their parents. It has to be their decision with their parents or representative”, he told OwnGoalNigeria.com in an exclusive chat.

Nigerian Defender With Dreams Of Playing For Super Eagles Included In South Africa World Cup Squad

0

Head coach of the senior national team of South Africa Hugo Broos has released the provisional list of players that will represent the country when they begin their campaign in the qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup, OwnGoalNigeria.com reports.

South Africa will begin their campaign in the qualifiers in November with consecutively games against Benin Republic and Rwanda respectively. Ahead of the game, the coach has released a 44- man preliminary list.

He will trim it down to 23 before the first game on the 16th against Benin in Pretoria, the same selected players will be the squad for the game against Rwanda on the 19th.

A shock inclusion is Ime Okon, the 19 year old Supersport United defender, who is also eligible for Nigeria, the country of his father. He was first selected in their preliminary sqaud in September for the friendly games against Namibia and Dr Congo but he didn’t make the final shortlist of 23 players.

Shortly after he was asked about the chances of considering an offer from Nigeria and he stated that he is open minded, even through he currently feels South Africa wants him more.

“I just don’t want any pressure, but I just keep my mind open to both and whatever comes first then we’ll see what happens because it’s quite a tough decision for me. South Africa is a country I was born and bred in, but Nigeria is my home where my dad is from”, he was quoted as telling
South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) by Soccer Laduma.

“It’s very tough to make, but I feel like whenever the opportunity comes I’ll take it with both hands.

“I’d say for now it’s better with South Africa because with Hugo Broos he sees us around. With Nigeria, it’ll be quite tough, but I just do my best to also get a call up there.”

Super Eagles Star Makes Arsenal To Recall Brazilian Sensation From Loan

0

English Premier League side Arsenal are considering ending the loan spell of Brazilian winger Marquinhos with French Ligue 1 side Nantes due to a lack of game time, OwnGoalNigeria.com understands.

The 20 year old was sent out on a season long loan but it could be cut short has he made just one start in Ligue 1 this season with a total of just 88 minutes played so far. A situation that isn’t ideal for his development that made the club to send him in loan.

Marquinhos who loves to play from the left was recruited by Nantes with doubts surrounding the future of Nigeria international winger Moses Simon, who was expected to leave the club during the summer transfer window.

Simon decided against a move for family reasons and he is having one of his best starts to a campaign in the last few years with four assists and two goals from the opening ten games of the season.

His form has made it impossible for the on loan Arsenal winger to get game time and it could be the reason why he will leave the club in January. A provision in his loan deal means it can be cut short in three months time.

Super Falcons Coach Breached His Contract – NFF Accuse Waldrum Of Abandoning His Job

0

The Super Falcons of Nigeria will need to be at the top of their game against the Ethiopian Women National football team, as they seek to keep alive their 2024 Olympic dream.

Victory for the World Cup Quarter finalists, will take Nigeria one step closer to the World’s biggest Sports Fiesta, a competition they failed to attend in Tokyo Japan, four years ago.

To do that, the girls will be without their US born tactician whose romance with the Nigeria football federation came to the point of break-up, with barely a few days to the Women’s World Cup which took place earlier this year in Australia/New Zealand.

It will be recalled, that Waldrum went dirty on local and international media,  attacking his employers by calling them names and the NFF responded by describing the American as the worst national team coach to ever manage the Super Falcons.

Coincidentally, the Super Falcons rose to the ocassion at the World Cup, defeating Women’s football Super powers like Canada and Australia on their way to the Quarter finals where they bowed out to eventual finalists, England.

After the World Cup, Waldrum and his employers agreed that both parties will have to wait till the expiration of his current contract before taking a decision on whether to renew or terminate.

Feelers from the football Fédération has it that apart from the NFF president Ibrahim Gusau who seem to have a soft spot for Waldrum, other board members, chieftains of the NFF technical Committee and technical department, have resolved that this is the right time to relieve the 66-year old American of his 10,000 dollars monthly job.

Many have not forgiven the coach for all his negative media rants against the federation prior to the team’s departure to Australia/New Zealand for the Women’s World Cup.

Secondly, the NFF technical Committee contacted Waldrum two weeks before the Olympic Qualifier with Lucy of Ethiopia, asking for his team’s match programme and list of invited players but all they got from the coach is that he won’t be available to thinker the team as he will need time off, to attend to his sick wife who will be undergoing surgery about thesame time the Falcons will be getting ready to play the match with Ethiopia.

Nigerian born Justin Madugu guided the team to a 1-1 draw in Addis Ababa and will be incharge, when the Super Falcons file out for the return leg against their Ethiopian counterparts on Tuesday October 31, at the Moshood Abiola international Stadium, in Abuja.

Based on the agreement between the Nigeria football federation and Waldrum, signed in February 2021, the American put pen to a two year contract that will expire after Tuesday’s match with Ethiopia a match he never showed up for.

By the content of the agreement reached between both parties, Random has already breached a part of the contract by going to the media to tarnish the image of his employers and has done even more havoc with his failure to show up for the games with Ethiopia.

A member of the NFF technical Committee who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the committee has recieved pictures and video footages of Waldrum working on the sidelines with University of Pittsburgh, thesame team he was coaching before accepting the Super Falcons job.

“I am not saying his wife is not sick, I doubt if any man will want to lie with the health of his wife. What I am saying, is that, we have evidences of him (Waldrum) passing instructions to players of University of Pittsburgh in two recent matches. I hope he will be bold enough to defend himself when these facts are presented before him the official said”

A win for the Super Falcons will see them qualify for the next round of the Olympic Qualifier where they will tackle the winner of the tie between Cameroon and Uganda.
