Real Reason Why Sadiq Umar Was Picked By Rohr Ahead Of Red Hot Onuachu

0

A lot has been said about the decision of coach of the senior national team of Nigeria Gernot Rohr to pick Almeria Sadiq Umar ahead of Genk forward Paul Onuachu.

Onuachu is currently in the running for the European Golden Shoe award with 25 goals in 29 matches making him the top scorer in Belgium top division and one of the best in the Europe.

On the other hand Sadiq has scored 14 goals this season for promotion chasing Spanish second division side Almeria although he did score 6 before leaving Serbian side Partizan Belgrade in the summer.

Both players were named by Rohr but while Sadiq goes into the main list, Onuachu was placed as standby alongside seven others for the AFCON 2022 qualifiers games against Benin Republic and Lesotho respectively.

The decision hasn’t gone down well with a lot of football followers in Nigeria but according to a member of the back room staff of the coach, it’s about giving Sadiq a chance as a reward for his fine form the past 18 months.

“ You see Onuachu and Sadiq are very similar in size and style. They have that bean pole physique that Rohr has been looking for. It was on that basis that Simy Nwankwo made the squad for the World Cup in Russia”, he told Owngoalnigeria.com.

“ Simy didn’t take his chance after making an initial impression. Pre World Cup, World Cup and even post World Cup he wasn’t giving Rohr what we thought he would. Hence the decision to go for a similar striker in Onuachu. Who was playing in Denmark then.

“ In his first game, he not only scored but held the ball up nicely, something the team lacks at that time making him the first choice striker going into AFCON 2019. He started the first game ahead of Odion Ighalo and he disappointed. That was how he lost his spot.

“ Ighalo ended up as top scorer at the tournament and Osimhen moved from third choice to first choice on the strength of his performance for Lille and the subsequent national team games. That’s how Onuachu became second choice”, he explained.

“ Now back to Sadiq and Onuachu. One has had several chances and didn’t take it and there is no international break before the World Cup qualifiers begin, so it’s only normal we try Sadiq. It’s about bringing in players who will add something different to the team”.

Shunned France, England For Nigeria- Who Is Super Eagles New Number Ten Michael Olise

0

19 year old Michael Olise was among the new names in the Super Eagles squad for AFCON 2022 qualifiers when it was released yesterday by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF).

The Reading midfielder was among the seven players placed on standby by coach of the team Gernot Rohr as he is yet to be issued a Nigerian passport after agreeing to switch allegiance from France.

Many are wondering how good is the left footed midfielder who has been picked by Gernot Rohr as the new creative hub of the Super Eagles.?

He is probably the most promising attacking talent in the Championship right now, and there’s plenty more where that came from.

“He was maybe the most wonderful and fantastic talent I’ve worked with,” Jose Gomes, the former Reading manager who gave Olise his senior debut, tells The Athletic. “And look — I’ve worked with very strong academies, at Porto, Benfica, Panathinaikos, Malaga, with a lot of important and big talents.”

The son of Nigerian parents, Olise was born in France and represented them at the Toulon Tournament last summer, but is eligible for England, where he grew up. Nominally, he’s a No 10 but you could stick him anywhere across the attacking line and he’d probably still be the best player on the pitch.

“Michael is really special,” continues Gomes. “He can see, even before receiving the ball, more options than regular players. His technical ability and speed, decision capacity is really, really good.”

“He’s a player made for a YouTube compilation, who constantly looks like he’s showing off for someone in the crowd. These sound like insults but they’re a crucial part of his game. He’s productive alongside the flamboyance.

He has seven assists to his name this season, the most of any player in the Championship, placing him ahead of proven Premier League creators such as Emiliano Buendia (six assists), David Brooks (five) and Harry Wilson (four).

In the opening weeks of the season, Reading were a tricky team to get a handle on. They were a side who had taken the fewest shots in the division but only dropped two points in their first eight games, but when you’ve got a creator pinging in pinpoint set pieces or drawing three men to leave a colleague in acres of space, or playing absurd reverse passes through gaps water might think twice about penetrating, then you might not actually need many shots to score.

In terms of gait and running style, he resembles a left-footed Jesse Lingard. However, there are more tricks — lots more tricks. The way he teases defenders by showing them just enough of the ball before flicking it away is cruel, almost like dangling a treat for a dog but jerking it out of reach just as the gullible pet/defender jumps for it. Simply put, he often looks like he’s taking the piss. He’s the sort of player that you’d watch and think, “I bet he gets kicked a lot in training”. And, as it turns out, you’d be right.

“At times, he had this little bit of arrogance about him in training,” says Mark Bowen, the man who was Reading’s director of football and then replaced Gomes last year. “If he overstepped the mark with it, which he did once or twice, you’d have players like a Liam Moore, who would fly in and leave something on him.”

Being hoofed in the air by a hoary old veteran might discourage some youngsters, but Olise isn’t among them.

“The one thing that really stood out for me was even during those training sessions, if he got clobbered or clumped by any player, he would bounce straight back up. That was unusual because young players coming in, they’re often a little bit of a shrinking violet. He wasn’t like that. He would basically get back up, wipe himself down and get on with things. I thought, ‘That shows he’s got a good level of maturity’.”

On top of everything else, Olise is potentially a bargain. The Athletic understands he has an £8 million release clause in his contract, meaning that even in these times of COVID-straitened budgets, he wouldn’t even be that much of a risk for any Premier League club who’d like a rough but still sparkling diamond to polish some more. Spurs have been watching him for some time and half the Premier League have been credited with an interest.

The obvious question to ask is, in this world of sophisticated scouting operations, where big clubs seem to know who the best young talents at EFL clubs are before the clubs themselves do, if he’s this good, why hasn’t Olise been snapped up before? And, indeed, why was he not signed up by the academies of Chelsea and Manchester City, where he spent some time earlier in his career?

Bowen explains, about watching Olise playing for Reading’s reserves: “He’d be playing in a wide area and do a little bit of brilliance, but then lose the ball. And then he’d walk back. You could see in his mind it would almost be, ‘Yeah, OK, it didn’t happen today but I didn’t really want to be here. It’s reserve-team football’.” It took a while to actually get into him that every game he plays. There are people watching him.

“I said, ‘Those are the times when you’ve got to be running harder than everybody else, working harder than everybody else. If things aren’t going right for you on the ball, then those people who think you’re a good player will still come back and forgive you that’.”

Elements of those concerns still linger. Current Reading manager Veljko Paunovic left him out of a few games recently and offered a hint as to why when he said: “You can expect, from the young players, a certain lack of understanding of the big picture.” But it’s perhaps telling that in two of the games Olise has come off the bench, he’s provided a goal and an assist.

“We cannot forget he’s a kid,” says Gomes. “He’s very young, he’s growing and he needs a lot of support. Because without this support, maybe he cannot show all of this talent.”

Olise will be playing in the Premier League sooner or later. It could be January, it might be after that. At the moment, it just feels like a question of which club will make the decisive move, rather than whether any of them will.

“He deserves everything,” says Gomes. “If my words can give him strength and confidence, it’s my obligation to do it.”

France Unhappy With Newly Invited Super Eagles Number 10 Michael Olise For Switching To Nigeria

Born to parents of Nigerian descent he has represented France twice at U18 level but has now committed himself to Nigeria at senior level and in the process also spurn the chance to represent England in the future.

His decision to shun both European countries hasn’t gone down well with the football authorities in France as he is one player they wouldn’t have love to lose at this age and stage of his career.

He is having one of his best seasons till date and rumors has it that he could be in line for a move to the English Premier League with a host of clubs keen on triggering his £8 million release clause.

“ They see it as a coup here by Nigeria particularly the U18 coach who has built his team around him. This happen to them all the time but when you look at it that he is just 19 then you will understand the outrage better. They are not happy with his decision but the lad has made his mind up”, Mark Rowland told Owngoalnigeria.com.

Ahmed Musa Is Not In My List, He Won’t Play Against Benin, Lesotho – Rohr Explains

Coach of the senior national team of Nigeria Gernot Rohr has cleared the air on the controversial inclusion of Ahmed Musa in the Super Eagles squad for AFCON 2022 qualifiers.

Ahead of back to back qualifiers games against Benin Republic and Lesotho, the coach named a 24 man squad that has clueless captain Ahmed Musa as part of the players.

His inclusion caused a lot of ripples with many questioning the smartness in including a player who last played football in October last year and is presently without a team following his failure to bag a short term deal with West Brom.

Rohr exclusively told LEADERSHIP Sports that the former CSKA Moscow striker would play no part in the last two group games.

“He is not in the list of 23-man but he is invited like a captain, not like a player of the list,” Rohr said.

“Nigerians should expect good football and qualifications for the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations,” he concluded.

The club announced that due to the invitation, Sadiq will miss two league matches which is the game at home to Leganes and the away tie against Malaga as they continue their push for promotion back to the La Liga.

His invitation will also see him lose ground on his quest to finish as top scorer in the league with Sporting Gijon Djuka currently leading the race with 17 goals, three more than Sadiq who is third behind Raul de Tomas of Espanyol who is second in the top scorers race.

Agent Coy On Inclusion Of Fulham Ace Ademola Lookman In Super Eagles Squad For AFCON Qualifiers

0

The agent of Fulham wing forward Ademola Lookman has refuse to confirm or deny his invitation to the senior national team of Nigeria for the 2022 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

Lookman who has already applied for a switch of allegiance from England to Nigeria since 2019 after representing England at youth level is believed to be among the four new players in the squad.

As reported by this portal, coach Gernot Rohr called up four new players in the list which will be made official later this week with two of the players on standby due to administrative and sporting reasons.

Ahead of the official release of the list , the representative of Lookman who is on loan to Fulham from German side RB Leipzig stayed coy on his invitation to the national team of Nigeria.

“ Talks are ongoing over a call up. For now that’s all I can say but in the coming days you will get to know more”, he said when we sought to know if he has been called up by Nigeria for the games against Benin Republic and Lesotho respectively.

Rohr Confirms Ahmed Musa Inclusion In AFCON 2022 Qualifiers Squad, Six Players On Standby

0

As first reported by Owngoalnigeria.com, coach of the senior national team of Nigeria Gernot Rohr has confirmed the inclusion of Super Eagles captain Ahmed Musa in the squad for the AFCON 2022 qualifiers.

Musa last taste of competitive football was in November 2020 when Nigeria drew 0-0 away to Sierra Leone. His clubless status since leaving Saudi Arabia outfit Al Nassr meant he hasn’t tasted club football since the 10th of October 2020.

A failed move to English Premier League side West Brom in January denied him the chance to get his club career back on track but Rohr has shown his faith in his leadership quality by including him in the squad.

Nigeria will take on Benin Republic in Porto Novo before taking on Lesotho in Lagos searching for one point out of six to be at next year AFCON. Musa will lead the team as confirmed by Rohr.

The coach also confirmed that six players will be on standby outside the 23 players in the list who will prosecute the games at the end of this month.

“All is going well,” the former Bordeaux coach told NationSport. “The list is done; NFF will release the list soon. We have a list of 23 plus captain Musa; six players on standby,”

Rohr Insist On Clubless Ahmed Musa In Super Eagles Squad For AFCON Qualifiers

0

Captain of the senior national team of Nigeria Ahmed Musa is among the players called up by coach of the senior national team of Nigeria Gernot Rohr for the 2022 AFCON qualifiers, Owngoalnigeria.com can exclusively reveal.

Rohr backtracked on his earlier decision to leave his captain out by including him in his squad despite his current status as a clueless player who last played competitive club football on the 22nd of October last year.

Musa terminated his contact with Al Nassr of Saudi Arabia after growing frustrated with life in the oil rich country but his bid to get a new club suffered a set back when he failed to bag a deal with West Brom during the January transfer window.

Now back in Nigeria, he will be among the players who will resume training for the AFCON qualifiers games against Benin Republic and Lesotho respectively at the end of this month.

“ Musa is in the squad on the insistence of the coach. Rohr knows why he wants him around the team and as the coach we have to grant him what he wants as per players selection”, an NFF board member told this portal.

He Reminds Me Of Rashidi Yekini – Sunday Oliseh Speaks On Osimhen’s Goal Against Bologna

0

Former captain and coach of the senior national team of Nigeria Sunday Oliseh says the manner which Victor Osimhen took his goal against Bologna reminds him of legendary Nigerian forward Rashidi Yekini.

Osimhen sealed his return to action for Napoli with a well taken strike in their 3-1 win over Bologna. His pace, strength and composure to finish off a through pass made Oliseh to compare him to Yekini.

“ This just reminds me of the goal king, Rashidi Yekini. Victor Osimhen is full of potential”, Oliseh posted on Twitter in reaction to a video on the goal scored by Osimhen against Bologna.

Yekini remains Nigeria senior national team all time top scorer with 38 goals and for Osimhen to meet up to his count he has to improve on his current number of four goals in eight senior games for Nigeria.
