Chesea Nigerian Defender Tomori Makes History At WYC , Becomes First Player To Benefit From VAR

Chelsea Anglo Nigerian defender Fikayo Tomori went into the record books at the ongoing World Youth Championship by becoming the first player to benefit from the use of video assistant referee (VAR).

Tomori was elbowed in the face by Argentina forward Lautaro Martinez during the course of England 3-0 win over Argentina, but the incident was missed by the referee, who gave a corner kick instead from the resultant move.

However after receiving a message from the referee in charge of reviewing incidents using videos during games, the referee stopped play, reviewed the video before correctly sending off Martinez.

It was the first time the technology which made it’s debut at the tournament will be used in a FIFA organised tournament, and Tomori has made history as the first to benefit from it.

Fears concerning the issue of the technology slowing down the game was also put to rest as it took just under one minute for the referee to review the video before deciding to send Martinez off.
