Owngoalnigeria.com impeccable sources in the camp of the Super Eagles have revealed the reason why the duo of Henry Onyekuru and John Ogu missed out on the matchday squad for the South Africa tie.
Ogu was among the top performers for the team during training for the game while Onyekuru who finished as joint top scorer in Belgium with 24 goals was heavily tipped to make his debut as well.
However the duo were the shock omission from the matchday squad released by coach Gernot Rohr for the AFCON 2019 Qualifiers tie against South Africa in Uyo, and an explanation has been provided for their omission.
” Well for Ogu he will always be a part of the team, he is a very good player, but missing out on the training tour of France opened the door for Mikel Agu to win the coach over.
” Agu had more time to impress Rohr, and also remember the drills that were done for the game was held in France, Agu did well in interpreting the role in the friendly game against Togo which Ogu missed”, he told Owngoalnigeria.com.
” As for Onyekuru, it was a straight fight between him and Olarewaju Kayode, and Kayode got the nod to start ahead of him due to his ability to track back and help in defence. Don’t forget he also did very well against Senegal.
” Onyekuru has done enough to earn another call up. The coach made it known that he has headache in picking his matchday squad, he wish he could have them all but he is only allowed to select 18 players”.
