Akwa United manager Abdul Maikaba feels his side are still in the race to claim their first NPFL crown

Despite being 7 points behind table-topping Plateau United, the former Wikki Tourists gaffer feels his side has the ability to pip their rivals to top spot in the league.

“The ambition is to win the title for the first time with Akwa United,” Maikaba said.

“At this time of the season last term, Wikki Tourists were leading Enugu Rangers by 6 points, and at the end, Rangers won the trophy.

“Akwa United are 8 points behind Plateau United and we have an outstanding game at home. We can cover 8 points in 3 games and our job is to continue winning home and away.

“So, I believe it can happen this season.”

4th-placed Akwa United will move to third if they beat 3rd-placed Enyimba at the Godswill Akpabio stadium on Sunday.

Akwa United, who were founded in 1996 have never won the NPFL crown.
