Although Ahmed Musa has captained Nigeria to two consecutive wins in the AFCON 2019 Qualifiers in the absence of regular captain John Obi Mikel, coach Gernot Rohr insist the team still miss the leadership qualities of their main captain.
Speaking after the game next to Musa, Rohr said although Musa has proven himself as captain and leader of the team, the experience Mikel brings whenever he plays cannot be waved away due to the average age of the Nigerian team.
Rohr said Mikel’s experience is something the team rely on in some games due to the young players in the team who are still in need of some kind of guidance before they can proudly progress and impress without Mikel.
” We have a young team and Musa as captain is different in his style than our captain Mikel. We still need the experience of Mikel because our team is very young. Even younger than the one that went to the World Cup in Russia “, Rohr said.
” Mikel acts like a guide for us due to his experience and we will be happy to have him play for us in the coming games once he is fully fit, we still need him”.
