Daniel Akpeyi will once again watch from the stands when Nigeria take on Libya later today in the reverse tie of their AFCON 2019 Qualifiers game in Tunisia, Owngoalnigeria.com reports.
Akpeyi watched on in the first tie played in Uyo on Saturday as coach Gernot Rohr settled for the duo of Francis Uzoho and Ikechukwu Ezenwa as first and second choice goalkeeper respectively and same scenario has played out again.
During yesterday’s training session Akpeyi who is still the first choice of PSL side Chippa United trained with the outfield players while the aforementioned duo of Uzoho and Ezenwa were put through their paces by the goalkeeper coach of the team.
Uzoho had an extended drill which confirmed his status as first choice for today’s game while Ezenwa later had his but Akpeyi who is now third choice was made to train with the rest of the outfield players for the entire duration of the session.
A little over a year ago he was the first choice goalkeeper after first choice goalkeeper Carl Ikeme was diagnosed with Leukemia but a poor showing against Argentina in a friendly game which Nigeria won 4-2 appears to have cost him his spot.
Prior to the Argentina friendly injury saw him lose his spot as first choice to Ezenwa but the emergence of Uzoho means the duo have now dropped down the pecking order with Akpeyi dropping to as low as third choice.
