The battle to replace first choice goalkeeper Francis Uzoho in goal for Nigeria against South Africa this Saturday reached a new height yesterday after all three goalkeepers took part in a training match in their close door session.
Uzoho is absent due to injury and in his absence the trio of Ikechukwu Ezenwa, Daniel Akpeyi and Theophilus Afelokhai are pushing to man goal against South Africa in the AFCON 2019 Qualifiers in Johannesburg.
Owngoalnigeria.com gathered from sources who watched the session that all three goalkeepers gave a good impression of themselves with newly invited Afelokhai going a step further by stopping a penalty from captain Ahmed Musa.
Ezenwa was also at his best when he kept goal as his saves and reflexes helped his team keep out the attackers he was up against but Chippa United goalkeeper Daniel Akpeyi was about the best among the trio.
Akpeyi was very agile and also showed good ball handling abilities although he was beaten by Victor Osimhen for one of the goals he conceded. The form of all three goalkeepers has made coach Gernot Rohr to defer a decision on who will keep goal till later today.
Rohr was widely expected to name Ezenwa who is deputy to Uzoho but the coach refused to make a decision on who will be in goal probably due to the fine form of all three goalkeepers in training.
