Gernot Rohr has explained the reason why he is averse to inviting players playing in the Nigeria Profesional Football League ( NPFL) to his Super Eagles squad.
President of the Nigeria Football Federation ( NFF) Amaju Pinnick few weeks ago voiced out his unhappiness over the coach dependence on foreign base players, pointing out the game against Seychelles in the AFCON 2019 Qualifiers as a game which players based in the Nigeria league would have been able to prosecute.
Yesterday Rohr was once again asked about the chances of players plying their trade in the NPFL making the squad for the game against Seychelles, considering that Nigeria have already qualified for the Nations Cup.
The coach maintained his stands and pointed out what must be done before he can have a change of heart and include players in the NPFL in his squad in the future. He also insist that foreign based players are better than those at home for now.
“There is a problem with the organization of the championship. I have told you that I cannot take the local players who are not playing and can’t show that they are better than the players playing in Europ”, Rohr said.
“I want to see a good championship, a good league and then I have my assistants here who can always pick out the best.
“Most of the players playing for the Super Eagles are playing regularly in their championships in Belgium, in Germany and in France. They are playing at a high level over there,” Rohr councluded.
