The Flying Eagles of Nigeria got their campaign at the ongoing WAFU U20 Championship underway with a 0-0 draw against Niger Republic in their opening game.
Niger Republic were clearly the best team during the course of the game and it came as a surprise to many who watched the game as Nigeria are known to be super powers when it comes to football in Africa at this level.
According to Togolese Journalist Emmanuel Jonathan who saw the game, the Nigerian team were lucky to have escaped with a 0-0 draw as they were second best all through the encounter.
Jonathan went as far as saying the team didn’t play like a Nigerian team in anyway particularly the way they struggle to string passes together for the entire duration of the game.
” It was a very disappointing performance from the Nigerian team. We expected a lot from them but we got nothing close to what we anticipated before the game. They struggled all through the game. Niger were by far the better team”, Jonathan told Owngoalnigeria.com.
” I don’t know why Nigeria played so bad because they are a force at this level in Africa, infact they didn’t play like a team from Nigeria. They couldn’t string passes together for large spell of the game. They were lucky to have drawn the game”, he concluded.
