An explanation on why on loan Everton forward Henry Onyekuru didn’t drop to the U23s to help the prosecute the return leg of their Africa U23 Cup of Nations Qualifiers against Libya has been given to Owngoalnigeria.com.
Onyekuru was initially among five players who were to drop to the Nigeria Olympic team to help them overturn a 0-2 deficit suffered in the first leg against Libya in Tunisia on Wednesday.
However while the quartet of Francis Uzoho, Victor Osimhen, Valentine Ozornwafor and Chidozie Awaziem were drafted to the team shortly after the Super Eagles 3-1 win over Seychelles, Onyekuru was omitted.
Owngoalnigeria.com exclusively gathered that Galatasaray man was allowed to remain with the Super Eagles as the U23s has options in attack and Osimhen will quickly gel with the team as he has played with many of the players at youth level.
The technical crew of the U23 decided that it will be best to have Osimhen rekindle his partnership with Samuel Chukwueze at U23 level after their exploit at the U17 years ago, something Onyekuru could disrupt if he’s dropped to the team.
