The inclusion of captain of the Super Eagles of Nigeria Mikel Obi in the squad of Nigeria for the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt is not guarantee yet according to coach of the team Gernot Rohr, Owngoalnigeria.com reports.
Mikel is yet to play for Nigeria since the World Cup in Russia, no thanks to injury while in China before his move to English Championship side Middlesbrough in January.
At Middlesbrough he has grown into one of the leaders of the team and now wears the captain armband for the Championship side but he still wasn’t picked by Rohr for the last round of international games.
Although his agent did confirm to Owngoalnigeria.com that he is open to the idea of playing for Nigeria at the AFCON, Rohr insist he will have a chat with Mikel before deciding on naming him in his team for the tournament in Egypt.
“This is the question that I and my team will resolve. I will soon go to see him at Middlesbrough. There are many things to consider but I respect him and what he has done for Nigeria. He remains an important player.
“He has been away from the team for a year but we qualified for the AFCON without him. His absence, as our captain, has been evident. But he has had to deal with a range of issues, after the World Cup in Russia”, he was quoted as saying by Osasu Obayiuwana.
