Super Eagles goalkeeper for the opening game against Burundi Daniel Akpeyi says his performance between the sticks for Nigeria in the 1-0 win over Burundi in their AFCON 2019 opener shouldn’t be an issue because the team won.
Akpeyi made a very important save from point blank range to deny Burundi the chance to open scoring but during the course of the game had some nery moments which almost resulted in a goal for the Swallows.
While asked to rate his performance, the Kaizer Chiefs shot stopper said the team deserve to share the joy of the win and it shouldn’t be about his saves or mistakes as basically the idea of the first game is for them to pick up a win.
” I can’t say I helped the team win. I did my job and other did theirs as well. It’s a team effort and it’s what matters most. We keep improving from game to game and with or without individual errors the idea is to win games and we did that against Burundi “, Akpeyi told Owngoalnigeria.com.
He is expected to keep his spot for the second group game against Guinea with coach Gernot Rohr revealing that he is happy with his performance against Guinea but Akpeyi is not getting carried away.
” Whoever is picked will get the support of the other goalkeepers. I will like to continue in goal for the rest of the tournament but it’s not my decision to make but that of thje coaches. I will keep working hard for the good of the team”.
