19 year old Fortuna Dusseldorf shot stopper Maduka Okoye has been handed his first call up to the senior national team of Nigeria by coach Gernot Rohr, Owngoalnigeria.com understands.
Rohr got wind of the shot stopper last season during his tour to Germany and he was impressed by what he saw in the shot stopper who was third choice goalkeeper for then second division side Fortuna Dusseldorf.
Fortuna Dusseldorf are now in the Bundesliga but Okoye isn’t among the four goalkeepers picked by the team for their campaign meaning he will spend the season with the U23 team who are playing in the 4th division in Germany.
Last season he trained severally with the first team but wasn’t considered good enough to make the bench for any of their game and despite taking part in pre season training he still wasn’t named in their squad for the season.
Despite the obvious setback he has endured in his club career, Rohr rates the 19 year old highly and he will likely be among the three goalkeepers for the Super Eagles and also a part of the U23s when they regroup for their AFCON U23 qualifier game against Sudan.
