An explanation on why Dennis Emmanuel Bonaventure made the Super Eagles team as a late call up ahead of his Club Brugge teammate David Okereke has been provided by coach of the team Gernot Rohr.
Okereke has had a better start to the season than Bonaventure with four goals to his name but when Henry Onyekuru pulled out from the game due to work permit issues at his new club Monaco, it was Bonaventure who got the nod to replace him.
The decision sparked a debate on the rationale behind the call up but according to Rohr, it was a well thought out decision that has a lot to do with not just how the players have started the season.
According to the coach Bonaventure was called up after a year of extensive scouting by the technical crew of the team and he would have been called up earlier but other players were ahead of him in the pecking order.
He got his chance when Onyekuru pulled out of the game, the coach assured that Okereke will get his chance but he need to show consistency for the rest of the season in order to help his chance of getting invited sooner.
