Former Chelsea defender Celestine Babayaro has reacted to the decision by Chelsea striker Tammy Abraham to shun interest from Nigeria and commit his international future to England, Owngoalnigeria.com reports.

Abraham represented England at various youth levels before making the step up to the senior team where he played in a pre World Cup friendly and that kept him eligible for Nigeria until his latest cal up to the squad of England for their upcoming Euro 2020 qualifiers against Czech Republic and Bulgaria respectively.

Prior to the call up the striker said he was still weighing his options but his decision to honour the call up from England shows he has agreed to pitch tent with the Three Lions, something that Babayaro who had over 40 caps for Nigeria believe came at the wrong time.

” You know it’s difficult for these kids born abroad to snub the surrounding they know for another. However Tammy should have accepted to be a part of the Nigerian project which is an exciting one than accept a bit part role with the English set up because they are other strikers ahead of him”, Babayaro told Owngoalnigeria.com.

” As much as we should respect his decision, it somehow came at the wrong time considering how both teams are set up for now. Nigeria are building an exciting project where it’s possible to get in but England are consolidating on a fine World Cup with just few players to add to the depth”.
