The invitation of Cyriel Dessers to the senior national team of Nigeria has already triggered talks of a battle for the number nine position of the team between the Belgian-Nigerian and Victor Osimhen as both players have been in good goal scoring for their respective teams.
Coach of the senior national team of Nigeria Gernot Rohr invited the duo as part of his 24 man squad for the upcoming back to back AFCON 2021 Qualifiers games against Sierra Leone later this month. They are expected to battle for a spot in attack.
Speaking to Owngoalnigeria.com, respected Dutch journalist Jermain Leitbig insist the duo can play together as their style of player is different and they could compliment one another if played together in attack.
” Dessers’s style of play is entirely different from that of Osimhen. Yes they are both comfortable playing as the top striker but they are very different in style so you can play them together in attack. Osimhen should play behind Dessers though “, he explained.
” Osimhen creates a lot because of his skill set and hold up play. Dessers come alive in the box just like Odion Ighalo, they are very similar in style. They use their body wisely and also finish very well. It’s a healthy situation to be in”, he concluded.
