Nigeria International and Victoria de Guimaraes midfielder, Mikel Agu has replied followers of the Super Eagles who hold the opinion that his invitation to the national team of Nigeria is unjustifiable.

The 26-year old Agu said his hardwork and performances at club level is the reason he earns international call-ups.
Some section of Super Eagles followers have previously opined the Portugal-based player is unmeritoriously favoured by the national team coach and that is why he gets called up frequently.

Reacting to this line of thought, Mikel Agu said “the problem is that most Nigerians do not get to watch me in the Portuguese League or in the Turkish League. I had a massive season but because these fans they don’t watch the league, they can’t really see what I do for my club that gives me that opportunity for call-ups. Back to back, I am among the top 5 Nigerian midfielders playing abroad”.

Agu explained he does not get favours from Gernot Rohr but rather what he does abroad helps him get national team invites.

“We don’t even talk regularly (with Rohr), we only get to exchange messages sometimes, like how are you doing, how is the league going? Fans think we talk every day”.

Agu so far has made 7 appearances for Nigeria after making his international debut in June 2017 against Corsica and followed up with another outing against Togo few days later.

He was part of Nigeria’s 30-man preliminary 2018 World Cup squad before failing to make the final 23.

The former Bursaspur player was also in Nigeria’s 35-man provisional squad for 2016 Summer Olympics.
