Few months after turning down the chance to represent Nigeria at Under-20 level, highly-rated teen Xavier Amaechi has continued to find first team action hard to come-by almost a year after refusing to sign a contract extension at Arsenal to instead join Hamburger SV in the Bundesliga 2.
The Anglo-Nigerian winger rejected Arsenal’s extension and snubbed other offers to sign a four-year deal worth 2.5 million Euros as he moved to Germany.
Since arriving the Deutschland, the 19 year old has only had 18 minutes of first team action while making appearances for the reserve side in the fourth division.
Since the restart of the Bundesliga 2 after the COVID-19 pause, Amaechi has had to sit on the bench for 90 minutes in all three games so far and the player is said to be losing sleep over his inability to get game times.
He has made appearances for England at the U16, U17 and U19 levels. Amaechi is eligible for Nigeria through is paternal roots and was approached by the coach of the Nigeria U20 Paul Aigbogun but he turned it down shortly before the World Cup in Poland.
