Bayern Munich teen star Jamal Musiala has explained the reason behind his decision to pick Germany ahead of England at senior international level.
The 17 year old was born to a German mother and a British-Nigerian father making him eligible for all three countries. He ended up representing Germany and England at different youth levels.
He even captained the English U17 team in a friendly game against Germany in 2019 and represented the U19s during the last international break. He will however represent Germany henceforth starting from next month international window.
Explaining his decision, the 17 year old who will sign a long term professional deal with Bayern Munich when he turns 18 on Friday didn’t make mention of Nigeria despite meeting with the coach of the Nigerian team last year.
Gernot Rohr approached the midfielder and offered him the chance of playing for Nigeria after Bayern Munich UEFA Champions League final win over PSG but he didn’t acknowledge the West African nation as an option in an interview with The Athletics.
“I’ve thought about this question a lot,” he says. “What is best for my future? Where do I have more chances to play? In the end, I just listened to the feeling that over a long period of time kept telling me that it was the right decision to play for Germany, the land I was born in. Still, it wasn’t an easy decision for me”, he told the Athletics.
