The international future of Saleritana new signing Simy Nwankwo has been thrown into further doubts by the coach of the Nigerian team Gernot Rohr.
Rohr handed Simy his international debut and even a spot in Nigeria’s World Cup squad for the 2018 World Cup. He made just one appearance at the tournament but was subsequently frozen out of the team.
His decision to remain with relegated Crotone played a huge role in the decision of the coach to leave him out of the squad for the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations. He returned with a bang last season scoring 20 goals in the Serie A for Crotone who were once again relegated.
The feat earned him a re-call up to the Super Eagles for the back to back friendly game against Cameroon but he couldn’t honour the chance due to travel restrictions in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic.
Rohr didn’t consider him for the squad for the start of the World Cup Qualifiers and he has also hinted that he could be out of the team for a while unless one of the strikers ahead of him drops out of reckoning.
“Simy is another player at the center of our scouting, but in the Nigeria squad we have many high profile strikers. There is a great competition in the role of center forward and it will not be easy for him to carve out space. In any case, I take advantage of it. to send a big good luck for this season to Osimhen with Napoli and Simy with Salernitana”, he said.
