The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has explained why they haven’t made a definite statement on Austine Eguavoen staying on as coach of the senior national team of Nigeria.
Eguavoen was named as interim coach for the Africa Cup of Nations with Jose Peseiro announced as the man to take over immediately after the tournament, but it appears there is a change of plans regarding the head coach role.
Nigeria crashed out of the AFCON in the round of 16 and Eguavoen revealed that he will be back in his role as technical director, however a breakdown in talks with Peseiro could see him stay on as coach of the team at least for the World Cup qualifiers playoff against Ghana.
For now the idea is to beef up the technical crew with the addition of Emmanuel Amunike as one of the assistants ahead of the World Cup playoff. Though it’s public knowledge, an announcement is yet to be made on the next step forward.
” We just received the technical report of the AFCON tournament last week. It will go a long way in determining our next step. We also have to work out terms of Eguavoen’s contract but short terms and long term. Yes we have plans to engage Amunike as well but in a capacity that has to be defined in order for them all to have a smooth working relationship”, a chieftain of the NFF told OwnGoalNigeria.com.
