Nottingham Forest produced one of the upset of the season by beating Liverpool 1-0 in the English Premier League first game of the weekend on Saturday.
The result was made possible by a goal from Nigeria international forward Taiwo Awoniyi, who was quick to a rebound after his initial effort was pushed to the woodwork by Allison Becker. He responded to what is the biggest goal in his career for now with a muted celebration.
Awoniyi was on the books of Liverpool for six seasons but left on a permanent transfer two years ago after having as many as six loan spells. He was signed by Nottingham Forest after a fine season in Germany with Union Berlin.
According to Awoniyi he didn’t celebrate the goal out of respect for the club that gave him his first chance at senor football by signing him, after his exploits for Nigeria at several youth levels. He said he still remains grateful even though he didn’t make a single appearance for them.
” They brought me to Europe and made me have the career I dream of having. I can’t forget how it all happened. Happy over the win and the goal I scored and hopefully the start of a regular run of results for us”, he told OwnGoalNigeria.comyesterday evening.
