Arsenal star Bukayo Saka who is presently in Nigeria on holiday has asked fans of the senior national team of Nigeria to understand his decision to play for England ahead of Nigeria, OwnGoalNigeria.comreports.
Saka progressed through the youth ranks at Arsenal and England as well but at some point the option of playing for Nigeria, a country he qualifies for through his parents was offered to him.
He turned it down in preference for his country of birth, where he has since gone on to become one of the stars of the team. That hasn’t stopped him from explaining and calling for understanding over his decision to pick England ahead of Nigeria.
” I’m happy to represent England at international level but I am also proud of my Nigerian heritage from my parents”, he told Sky Sports.
“Choosing Nigeria over England would have been a tough decision. My whole family has been in England like forever, it would be very strange for me to adapt to an environment that I had never been at since growing up. When I grew up all my documents stated that I am English, hopefully Nigerian people will understand.”
