Head coach of the senior national team of Nigeria Jose Peseiro has explained why the senior national team of Nigeria plays with four offensive players, OwnGoalNigeria.com reports.
Since taking over as coach of the Nigerian team, the Portuguese has lined the team in a 4-4-2 formation, which becomes 4-2-4 when the team attacks. A formation that is far from the 4-3-3 used by former coach Gernot Rohr for almost five years. Occasionally Rohr plays 3-5-2.
Explaining why he has refused to rejig the formation shortly after the 2-2 draw against Saudi Arabia, Peseiro said it’s the best and surest way to put to use the avalanche of talents available to the team in attack.
” Our strength in terms of players quality lies in attack, so we have to use effectively but I also know that you can’t play all attacking players in your team. You can’t win like that, so we look for balance and all through the team everyone is important for us to achieve results”, the Portuguese coach said.
Peseiro will likely use the same formation later today when they take on Mozambique in their second friendly game in preparation for the start of the qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup in November.
