The race for who will be the next coach of the senior national team of Nigeria following the exit of Jose Peseiro will hot up this month with the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) expected to conduct interviews for shortlisted candidates, OwnGoalNigeria.com can exclusively reveal.
Peseiro vacated his role as coach of the senior national team of Nigeria after leading the team to second place finish. No agreement was found on plans to extend his deal despite meeting the target of getting to at least the semi final of the tournament in Cote d’Ivoire.
His assistant Finidi George handled the team in their recent friendly games where they defeated Ghana 2-1 before bowing 1-2 to Mali in their second friendly game in the Moroccan city of Marrakesh.
Finidi is expected to stay in a role with the new set up expected to be known this month. For now we exclusively gathered that the race is down to two men in Toni Conceição and Domenec Torrent if the NFF stick to their idea of hiring a foreign coach.
Torrent who is the longest serving assistant of celebrated Manchester City coach Pep Guardiola is however confident that he stands a good chance of getting the nod to replace Peseiro.
As a matter of fact, we gathered he has started working on the team’s opponents when the qualification for the 2026 World Cup resumes. He also watched the both friendly games of the team.
Some members of the NFF are said to have hinted some players of the team that they will have a new coach who is likely a Spaniard by the end of this month.
